Default .223 rifle
I'm going to buy a .223 rifle for target shooting this month. I've been considering getting a Ruger Mini-14 with a 5 round magazine. I'm not looking for anything super-accurate, just fun to shoot. Anyone have other suggestions for california-legal .223 rifles in the same price range?

I started off looking at the Mini-14's. Then decided that since it'll be my only rifle, I'd go with a Mini-30 (7.62x39) which would be better to hunt with the larger caliber. Then after seeing how much the Mini-30's cost, I decided to go with an Arsenal SGL21. It's a great rifle and I love it.

I got an SGL21-63 at K-var.com. The prices have gone up a bit since I got one a few months ago.

Not sure about California gun laws and what is accepted and not.

My mom had an old .222 rifle, and I got some reloading equipment. With my reloading equipment, I got a rebate for 500 free bullets. I ordered .224 bullets because I could use it for my mom's rifle, and I could get a .223 rifle and use the bullets for that as well. The extractor on my mom's rifle turned out to be broken, and the gunsmith was unable to locate a replacement. So it pretty much has to be a .223 (especially since it is one of the most popular rifle bullets) or I am stuck with 500 bullets I can't use.

Well, don't let that make your decision. Ammo sells for a good price. You could probably sell that ammo at gunbrokers.com and then use that money for a new rifle. Now if you just like that caliber, that's cool too. Mini-14's seem pretty good to me. Can you get an AR15?

These are just bullets, not live ammo. I can reload .223 ammo for a pretty good price. The caliber is nice too. AR-15's are a little pricey here, and there are only a handful that are california legal. They either have a fixed magazine, or do not have a pistol grip.

Post pics when you get it! I love the Mini-14's look. Have you seen some of the different mini-14 tactical furniture?

This looks ok, but I'd prefer OD green instead of the coyote brown/tan. The classic wooden furniture looks very nice too, though.

Looks like this has a flash hider and sling, but pretty nice IMO.

I would definitely go for a wood stock on it. Now I am also looking at a Kel-Tec SU-16. If I can locate one, I can probably get it for cheaper than a Mini-14.

mini-14 would be fun. If i remember correctly, on an AR you can have a detachable magazine as long as you have to use a tool to remove it. would have to double check.

I thought about it, and I am going to go down tomorrow and look at/buy this gun:

I can buy it at the shooting range I go to for $500. It's on sale now. I like the mini-14, and may pick one up in the future, but I am starting to fall in love with this rifle.

Well, I made the down payment, I pay the rest when I pick it up (10 day waiting period). It's actually the CA model, not the B model which they said over the phone... I like the CA better anyway.

Those Kel-Tec's are pretty bad ass for the price. I hope you get a good one. Most kel-tecs I have shot have been pretty nice (32, 9mm pistols). And I have heard good things about those rifles.

Argh!!! I'd have stuck to the Mini-14... it's got the same self-cleaning gas system as the Garand and M14s. I loved shooting my dad's as I grew up... I've got the target model myself, but haven't shot it yet as I haven't gotten around to matching up Leupy bases, rings and a scope in stainless yet.

Cosmic - I wouldn't call that "Tactical." If it's not meant for real-world usage (which VERY few commercially pimped products are), it's more appropriately called "Tacticool."

I was really considering it, but the price won me over. I do plan on getting an M1A in the future, with a nice wooden stock... That's when I have more money to spend. If I ever move out of california, I will eventually build myself a custom AR-15.

Well, picked it up today, fired 20 rounds through it. It's fun to shoot.
