When my low fuel indicator light goes off, I know I have a little under half a tank of gas left. So I ignore it. I know when my fuel gauge shows empty, I have 4 gallons left. So I ignore it for a little longer. Today I learned how to tell when I really am out of gas: when the only way my car moves is in neutral, when I am pushing it or it is going down hill.
See, if my low fuel indicator and fuel gauge were actually accurate, I would listen to it. That's why running out of gas was totally not my fault. |

you are not a real man until you have run out of fuel at least once in your life... extra points if it was late at night in a bad neighborhood and you were alone!! |

I thought running out of fuel / not maintaining your vehicle was a woman thing. I swear every time I hop into my wife's car it's on E. I usually fill my vehicles up when they hit 1/4 tank. |

My first car's fuel gauge didn't work at all so I did run out a few times in that. Just use to carry a jerry can in the boot with some fuel in it for when I did run out. Was normally ok though, just reset the odometer when I put some petrol in it after running out a few times you can guess when you need more fuel before you run out totally.
I didn't think it was good practice to run dry in modern EFI cars... |

Some would say not to run out as the pump will have sucked all the crap from the bottom of the tank - but EFI use a filter and the crap was there, being gradually sucked up anyway. What was a problem were the NON common rail diesels as they'd need to be bled to get rid of the air in the system - been a lot of burned out starters from people just cranking and cranking and ... |

I like to do economy runs in my car to see how far i can go on a single tank! and then try and beat that the next time, and when ive been driving around foot to the floor i have a decent comparison too...
The way you react when you run out of fuel is the true test of a man... do you fall over ina ball and cry for your mamma... or do you make a plan? If its never happened to you... you dont yet know how your going to react http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfiUWSDPFWQ ... keep it real! |

I did once empty my car completely, but on purpose. I had a canister with me. I wanted to know how big my reserve really is. And surprisingly I could driver more than 100km with the "on reserve" signal on. Car manufacterors are really playing it safe these days.
I remember my old Opel Kadett. When the reserve light came on, you had 30km at most until it was empty. ![]() |

I have never run out completely, but there was a time I was driving to South Wales in 1999 (no sat nav back then!!) in my mum's really shitty 1.1 litre ford fiesta popular (Pic of such a horror below. I got lost and ended up zig zagging down the coast and was on reserve about half way there. I spent nearly 2 hours driving with it on completely empty - no late night petrol stations back then around there!

Actually, I think it is necessary to run a car out of gas. If you don't run out of gas, then how do you know at which point your car runs out of gas? |
