Default Damned low fuel indicator
When my low fuel indicator light goes off, I know I have a little under half a tank of gas left. So I ignore it. I know when my fuel gauge shows empty, I have 4 gallons left. So I ignore it for a little longer. Today I learned how to tell when I really am out of gas: when the only way my car moves is in neutral, when I am pushing it or it is going down hill.

See, if my low fuel indicator and fuel gauge were actually accurate, I would listen to it. That's why running out of gas was totally not my fault.

you are not a real man until you have run out of fuel at least once in your life... extra points if it was late at night in a bad neighborhood and you were alone!!

I thought running out of fuel / not maintaining your vehicle was a woman thing. I swear every time I hop into my wife's car it's on E. I usually fill my vehicles up when they hit 1/4 tank.

I only fill up when my car proceeds to stall after I start it the first time. That, or it takes 15 seconds to start. That's the only way I know I'm out. My gauge is way off, and the low fuel indicator doesn't work.

I was going up the coronado bridge in San Diego...during rush hour, and I ran out, well almost...car bucked and slowed to 25mph. I got to the crest and made it off....

holy crap...anyone who has been on that bridge in the middle of rush hour knows how much that would suck...no shoulders, big line of cars

Yeah Real men don't run out of fuel. Women and students do that. Common denominator between those 2 is the word 'c*nt'

Actually, I think it is necessary to run a car out of gas. If you don't run out of gas, then how do you know at which point your car runs out of gas?

I always try to fill up the tank when it's at 1/2...

I've owned a car for 4 years now and the low fuel indicator has lit up only twice.

Why do you need to know that?

My first car's fuel gauge didn't work at all so I did run out a few times in that. Just use to carry a jerry can in the boot with some fuel in it for when I did run out. Was normally ok though, just reset the odometer when I put some petrol in it after running out a few times you can guess when you need more fuel before you run out totally.

I didn't think it was good practice to run dry in modern EFI cars...

yeah, if there's any question of the guage reading high, a 5 or 10 litre container of petrol can be a lifesaver.
Some would say not to run out as the pump will have sucked all the crap from the bottom of the tank - but EFI use a filter and the crap was there, being gradually sucked up anyway.
What was a problem were the NON common rail diesels as they'd need to be bled to get rid of the air in the system - been a lot of burned out starters from people just cranking and cranking and ...

I like to do economy runs in my car to see how far i can go on a single tank! and then try and beat that the next time, and when ive been driving around foot to the floor i have a decent comparison too...

The way you react when you run out of fuel is the true test of a man... do you fall over ina ball and cry for your mamma... or do you make a plan?

If its never happened to you... you dont yet know how your going to react

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfiUWSDPFWQ ... keep it real!

I did once empty my car completely, but on purpose. I had a canister with me. I wanted to know how big my reserve really is. And surprisingly I could driver more than 100km with the "on reserve" signal on. Car manufacterors are really playing it safe these days.

I remember my old Opel Kadett. When the reserve light came on, you had 30km at most until it was empty.

I have never run out completely, but there was a time I was driving to South Wales in 1999 (no sat nav back then!!) in my mum's really shitty 1.1 litre ford fiesta popular (Pic of such a horror below. I got lost and ended up zig zagging down the coast and was on reserve about half way there. I spent nearly 2 hours driving with it on completely empty - no late night petrol stations back then around there!

Uhm, okay? Then you still have to drive it empty once, so you know how many km you can drive.

Most manuals will tell you. For example in the WRX, when the light comes on, at that point you have an estimated 2.8 gallons of gas left in the car. In the Spec V, my fill ups at the low end of the gauge were usually 11.5 gallons, when I have a 13.6 gallon tank, so same deal of ~2 gallons. That seems to be the common size for the reserve tank these days.

it is quite hard on the fuel pump as the fuel is used to lubricate the pump and cool the pump
