Perhaps not so much 'Athiest' as anti-Catholic - or at least that's how the "Christians" saw it, even though that aspect was severely dumbed down in the movie.
The boycotts and advertisers, etc, threats against the producers and future films from the studio also had a significant affect.

hmm you all interpreted the post the wrong way.. There are many movies out there set to make fun out of religion and put out their agendas. Religion is bad, science is the way to go etc.. And nobody is forcing anyone to watch a movie. The way shitty morals are pretended to be the "accepted" and good morals in movies is just about the same.

3 of them comment in "religious type" threads, so I don't think every time I post on the forum I make it obvious that I hate everything that you stand for. That would also imply that I only ever reply to your posts. I also don't hate what you stand for, or I would hate my fiancée and all of my family believe.

If your faith is actually EVERYTHING that you stand for, may I suggest that possibly it is you who needs to get a life?

New Age Religion does not in any way, shape, or form fall under athesim.

The Book of Eli is about faith, and Washington is convincing at portraying someone who uses it during a period when most people are shown to have lost social sanity (and most morals). Perhaps what makes it distinguishing (in my mind) is that the directors don't try, or feel they even need, to explain themselves in the script; because faith actually is identifiable by anyone with an average intelligence, even if you don't use it. The writing and pacing is perfect, if only the last (literal) 20 seconds were omitted.

I agree somewhat, I think (Spoiler): she was going back to get her mother, and she set off after the main character had died, which was after he quoted the entire bible to be written, which would have been plenty of time for Eli to teach her what he knew about surviving in the world.

Setting up for a sequel perhaps?

Answer: They showed him reciting while laying down with the white robes on and the table where the words were being written was full of pages stacked up (looked like seperated in books), I assumed this took a looooong time. The Bible, even reading every word would take forever, let alone reciting for dictation. All assumption though.

but...he was "protected" by God until his mission was complete, which was to bring the word of God to the people....

I love movies that leave it to the viewer to decide what happened, best kind of endings.
