You guys need to go Drink you Haterate, and back off my Madz skill! with a Simple click using ASUS CPU-Step up I overclocked my Core i7 920 to a Core i7 975! HA BEAT that! I'm wayz better then you allz and i have 12GB of 2133mhz ram with my SLI'ed 8400GS's beat that haha /end foolish rant

I never really got into modding things, i like to overclock Graphics card and CPU's most modding i ever done was flashing the BIO's of my EVGA 8800GTX to that of SSC [thumbup]

If anything you should see my friends rig, he is a modder at heart, modded his case, water-cooled everything with a custom loop looks pretty darn neat.

Here is his rig

You can see his build log in my clan's Forums.

I've done the Athlon bridging with a defroster kit.
Cut my own fan holes in cases.
Modded video cards with cpu heatsinks and funky ramsinks.
Watercooled with custom and prebuilt setups.
Opened a PSU and adjusted the POTS in it with a volt meter.
volt modded a video card.
Killed several parts of hardware from over-volting or overclocking.
Spent hours on end trying different settings for overclocks and testing them and documenting them.
Flashed this with that, etc etc etc.
Even reviewed hardware at one point.

And you know what, all it goes to show is I have a passion for it and can follow someone elses instructions on the internet well.

Unless you're figuring out the volt mods yourself, or how to do any other kind of mod...aesthetic or functional.... you're not really skilled. Just able to follow direction.

edit: Xax, nice work!

Those wannabes sure are annoying, it is ok however if you say you don't mod and just want more for your money.

I wish I had pictures of my custom aluminum foil + 486 heatsink setup that I used on my voodoo 3 2000 to keep it cool, that thing was about as ghetto as it gets, but it worked!

These days I dont even do much, maybe a nice safe overclock that doesnt really push anything. Ive come to realize a tiny bit more performance just isnt worth the risk with the prices of some of this stuff, I cant afford to spend money on computers anymore with a family to think about.

So long story short, getting old is a B****!

super glue and thermal paste to get ram heatsink's on from cut up cpu heatsinks

soldier or those metal pen modding old athalons to unlock mulitpliers

soldier modding old x800 pro into a x800 xt

getting glass and sand paper and lapping a smooth heatsink

omg soo much cutting of pc cases lol

so many broken things and yet so much enjoyment

it was the older experimenting, hoping it would work, breaking ****, but then once u got it to work and it was such a glory
The senior MO/FM o/c community is proud of you sir.

Does the lapping actually do anything in terms of temps ?
I honestly can´t see a big change, because afaik the thermal paste is there to sit itself into the small crevasses of the cpu/cooler and cooler and therefore create a better heat transition.
Did you miss my previous post?

http://www.yougamers.com/forum/showp...3&postcount=30

I had a huge difference in before/after temps. The thing idles at 35c, never idled below 40c prior. and the temps in RealTemp are nearly the same across both cores, when before the 2nd core was always a few degrees higher than the 1st.

I know most folks around here won't believe me, especially without screenies, but I stand by the results I've seen. Did it with a Pentium D 930 also, had great results there too.

Seriously?

Do you really think that thermal goop conducts heat better than polished copper? Is that why the heatsinks are made of thermal goop?
You sound like you are more suited for physics vs engineering. Does omitting thermal grease make things run cooler? No? OK, so we have now determined there is more to the equation than just the conductivity of the heatsink.

idead of lapping is this

optiamlly u want a 100% metal to metal connection, since this is almost impossible the thermal paste is there to fill in any spots that are left open by imperfections in either base of the metals, now by lapping u are greatly reducing those imperfections and getting closer to metal on metal contact therefore producing better heat transfer as the spots where not paste is needed is a much better thermal conductor

So why don't manufacturers just do that in the first place?

costs a lot more money for equipment and time to manufacture cpu's gpu's and heatsinks in such a mannor

yeah and come to think about it they don't care about keeping temperatures down that low.

As mentioned its all about cost. they do the minimum they need to do to the chips that can be mass produced the cheapest, and that simply works well enough for the general consumer. Power users/modders/enthusiasts whatever you want to call us simply take things further on our own to get as much as possible from the product for our $.

My biggest project was to take a laptop with the following specs:

celeron 700mhz
64mb of ram
10GB 4200rpm HDD
ATI rage mobility 4mb
8x CD-rom

and turn it into a machine capable of playing dvds.

First I replaced the 700mhz celeron with an 800mhz Pentium III, the multi was locked, so it was basically a 700mhz pentium III (celerons and pentiums had the same FSB).

I then plugged in an extra 128 mb of ram, that helped quite a bit.

Next the machine had only 1 usb port (really for a mouse), 1 PCMCIA slot (which I wanted for something later) and no inbuilt lan, so how to get it connected to the outside world? Well I took out the internal mini pci modem and replaced it with a intel 2200BG wireless card and routed an aerial in the case to give it internal 54G wireless [thumbup]

Next couple of changes were simple, an 8x slim DVD-rom and 7200rpm 80gig HDD with a copy of windows XP home. The faster hard drive helped off set the still small amount of ram.

Final bit was a PCMCIA audigy 2 ZS sound card (the one with HARDWARE sound acceleration [thumbup]) with 5.1 surround sound support that bypassed the AWFUL internal sound card

It had an external VGA port to connect it to a larger monitor.

The machine was capable of playing DVDs with full 5.1 sound without dropping any frames [rofl]

IMO what hardware you have is no issue, its what you can get out of it for what it is.
