Default My Mate Says
"My mate says..." is the bane of my fricken life. I swear, every guy who comes in here seems to have a "mate" who knows everything about computers. It's a struggle not to just say "Then why doesn't he fix it/build it for you then?"

A small selection of golden statements:

"My mate says....

AMD's are just cheap knock-offs of Intel CPU's"
AMD CPU's will fit in Intel Boards"
You can't play games with AMD chips"
AMD chips won't run windows, only Linux"
AMD Quad cores are only dual core"
ATI cards won't play 3D games"
ATI cards don't work with World of Warcraft"
ATI cards are made by 3DFX"
ATI cards blow up motherboards"
Linux is just a cheap knockoff of Windows"
You can't go online with Linux"
Nvidia cards won't work with AMD chips"
Nvidia cards won't work with Intel chips"
Nvidia cards aren't compatible with Windows 7"
Nvidia cards make your internet faster"
You need XP Pro to play games"

Anyone care to add to the idiocy?

Well, if you go back to the 486 (and 386?) days, it was true. Since then - no way!
Except maybe for the Pentiums - I know there were Cyrix CPUs that fitted the Pentium socket but don't think there were any AMD ones that did as Intel had taken legal action against AMD - anyone clarify this?

Anything Apple idiots say to others to justify their thousands dollar purchase of a machine. "I've heard..." or "I've read..." or "I've been told..."... no, you believe what you hear because you're a moron who can't operate something as complicated as a three-button mouse.

Well, it's easy to try and rationalize purchases to justify them to yourself, especially after you've already wasted your money. Look at the people who bought MW2 for the PC.

Didn't Socket 7 take Intel and AMD CPUs?
I mean Pentium and K5/K6/K6-II CPUs?

K6 needed Super Socket 7, but it was compatible with Pentiums as well...

Doh, you're right - it was when Intel went to slot 1 for the P2 that AMD had to introduce their own system.

Your mate needs to get amnesia so he can start over in the world of computer knowledge.

The last one is kind of true. I would never touch a computer with XP Home Edition, what a piece of ****!. I bet Home Starter (the cheapest anyway) of Win7 is just as ****. Quick&dirty to lure people..[thumbdown]

Anyway, just tell them they have to choose. Either they choose your service or their mate's advice but you can always warn them that their mate are way off.

What's wrong with XP Home Edition? I've been running it for years and it has served me well. It's certainly a lot better than what I was using before (Windows ME).

Yeah.. what's wrong with home? XP Home is just fine. There aren't any huge difference between home and pro.

Win 7 has even fewer differences. The most basic Win 7 is all the average person needs.

"AMD CPU's will burn your house down"

I heard this a lot back when the A64's came to dominance.
