Default Boeing Dreamliner ready for maiden flight
After two years of delay this big bird is ready
  • Boeing has touted the 787 as more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient
  • Company says plane is made of composite materials than are lighter than aluminum
  • Depending on configuration, Dreamliner can seat 200 to 300 passengers

that part you bolded should have the modifier "more" in front of it. As it is certainly not enviromentally friendly or fuel efficient... though compared to other birds it is more enviromentally friendly and fuel efficient.

Though i gotta say, for longer flights i still feel safer in a 4 engine bird.

Actually, if you work out the amount of fuel consumed per person per mile, aeroplanes can be more fuel efficient than cars.

But, on the other hand if the aeroplanes wouldn't exist, the people would travel less. [yes]

A moot point of course, and that of a Luddite but whatever.

Nah we'd all be going on holiday on smelly buses. [yes]

That's true. The time to travel somewhere for a holiday would be the same, only the distance to the resort would be reduced to one tenth.

How much do six 50 seat buses on a 400 mile trip stress the environment compared to one 300 seat airliner on a 4000 mile travel? In fact it seems an airliner isn't that horrendous environmentally. It's bad, but not really the hog it's depicted.

I'm looking forward to this aircraft. There is quite a bit of focus on passenger comfort. Things like adding humidity to the air so your don't feel dried out. Larger windows and I think you can control the tint of the window and stuff. Electric closing overhead baggage compartments.

Since it's a smaller plane with a long range, it means it can service long haul routes that don't have as many passengers that justify the use of a 777,747. So instead of a connector, you just go direct. So I guess more exotic island holidays.lol.

because 4 engined planes can also fly on 1...which effectively gives them 3 spares...and when i am crossing the atlantic, i like the idea of having 3 spares instead of 1.

I still remember my first flight on a Boeing 777 from Denver to Honolulu back in the Summer of '04. Oh my goodness what a dream flight. It was quiet in the plane, there was plenty of leg room, the steward & stewardesses were so nice. No turbulence, the landings were so soft you could hardly tell it landed.

Can't wait till I take my first flight on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner one day!

I always bring this fact up for those that are a bit scared of flying and are on a 777.

I quite like the aircraft, it's a little more comfy to fly in in comparison to the 747. It should be interesting to see how they improve the cabin with 747-800.

Concorde, perfect safety record, until....

The point is even the safest planes can crash, due to human error etc.
