Default What is your occupation?
I was just wondering what a community of gamers, overclockers, hardware enthusiasts, boys with toys and bench-markers do with themselves to fund the fun things in life.

What job do you have?
What qualifications? (optional)

I'm kind of curious to see if there is a trend in what we do (like most of us are IT professionals for example) and what we chose to study.

I'm a Web/ IT admin for a smallish dog accessories internet/ retail business. It's pretty fun surprisingly I don't get many computer problem calls. So that's nice .

I valet cars currently, as I work my way through school.

It pays really good (almost double minimum wage) and it is super easy. Easiest job that I have ever had.
Been applying other places though, that pay the same and include benefits. Been working there for over a year, and I dislike my boss. The job is so easy, but for some reason, he shouldn't even be qualified to be boss. Blames everyone but himself. Im also kind of tired having to deal with customers.

Barely anyone does! We basically work in areas where the future value of money needs to be assessed. That isn't to say we're always right, but we use various different types of modelling to predict the current impact of future financial events.

One example would be my area of specialization, pensions. You might ask the question of how much money would you need to invest today to receive £1 in a year? Assuming that you'll definitely live to receive it, it's simply a case of taking interest in to account and working backwards. If you change the time period to 25 years and the amount to £50,000, you need to predict what interest rates will do and assess the probability that you will still be alive. Expand this to a population of 50,000 pension scheme members with different ages, different amounts of pensions and different lifestyles, and you can see that it's not a simple problem. That's what I love about it.

Sounds extremely interesting. Not sure I'd have the maths for it but I love those sorts of problems. It must be a fun job, and well paid looking at your car lol.

I'll give you a little hint: I belong to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. I do believe that almost everyone here should be able to figure that out.

On another note, it looks like I'll soon be unemployed. Looks like I'll be out of a job just in time for Christmas. [thumbdown]

Unemployed, i was made redundant.

I've started doing a Level 2 ECDL because it's practically free when you are claiming job seekers allowance so i thought what the hell. Then i want to study a more specific part of IT, but i'm not sure what would be the best bet yet.

I have been a diesel technician for nearly 16 years.

Never had any formal diesel training, just a couple years of auto mechanics in high school, along with Marine Corps ROTC (I think I just wanted to avoid regular classes).

(backstory)
I had wrecked my first car, '72 Gran Torino Sport, and bought a '72 Mustang. I wanted to swap the engine out of the Torino. I ran into a snag, my mom got a hold of a fellow she knew that was a mechanic supervisor at a mixer plant. He came over, helped me out, and basically asked me if I wanted a job turning wrenches. So Friday I was sacking groceries and the following Monday I was changing oil under a cement mixer, lol

FF 15+ years and I work at a Sterling/Western Star dealership. I am G2 expert certified in the Mercedes Benz 4000, 900 engines and DD15/13 engines (Detroit Diesel), Caterpillar engines, '07 EPA diagnostics/repair, and many other certifications.

Studying Computer Science right now only 2 semesters left now![thumbup]

But I am working right now at several places, Web Master for my Uni's newspaper, Teacher's Assistant for an upper division web design class and doing a paid intern in web development at Blue Cross Blue Shield.

So ya technology related but I like the design aspect way more than the coding...

I did computer sales/tech when I first registered on MadOnion back in 2000. Now I'm the Director of Housing, Outreach, all food/meal services, and two other uninteresting programs at a 24-hour drop-in/shelter. I'm going on 7 years at this place now.

I have a BSc in Business Management and have yet to find employment.

Last job was as a Credit Controller for my industrial placement year of University, it wasn't my favourite job in the world but boy did it pay well. Since graduating I've been trying to get a job in a range of industries but nothing as yet. This bloody recession isn't amusing.

I'm getting to the point actually where theres going to be a nasty gap on my CV which I'm going to have to explain if I ever do get a job. Maybe I can say I went travelling after Uni ... round my home town
