Anomalous object at cashpoint.

I just visited a cash point to get some money out, but when I went to use it there was something attached to the slot where you put your card in. It was green plastic and had a picture of a lock on it. I was suspicious because I didn't know what it was and there have been many cases of criminals attaching things to the card slot of cash points in order to steal customers' card details. I ended up using the cash point next to it that didn't have anything attached to it.

Did you report it or just rush here to post?

Just what I was thinking!

They put that there to distract you, knowing you'll switch , the thiefs really get the codes from the machine next to it. You're screwed.

Terinalo 11-24-2009 10:10 PM

Who was I supposed to report it to? It wasn't at a bank it was at a supermarket. No doubt if I'd asked in there they would have said the cash points weren't anything to do with them.

Something like this?

AFAIK, they're a legit anti-skim slot for cashpoints. We have those exact ones in Holland too.

Yeah, it was more or less like that. I suspected it might be something like that but I wasn't sure. You can't be too careful these days so I decided to play safe and use another cash point.

Vomephems 11-24-2009 10:23 PM

ah well, look's like you switched to the trap one.

It's apathy like this that means people keep getting ripped off. Would it have really ruined your day to spend five minutes querying the supermarket rather than getting on the nerd express to futuremark?

For the record, I'd probably have done nothing about it as well.

5 minutes? More like an hour listening to some retarded babble on about how it's not his job, and he doesn't know, and waffles are on sale, but somebody spilled milk is aisle 12, and he isn't paid enough for this job, and his girlfriend left him.

I prefer to interact with as few people as possible when I'm out and about.

So what happens when the thieves design and install a device that looks just like this on the cash machines?

Seems like an ultra stupid thing to do by the banks. As it is, its straightforward to spot when something extra is attached to the slot. This changes all that, now if something is attached, it means extra security? [no]

I agree! They have such a good record as well. They never lose all their money through bad investment or lose millions of credit card details.

eduptultyt 11-25-2009 03:23 AM

It'd make sense if ALL cash machines had a flush slot, then it would be obvious if something was stuck on/in to it.

i suppose in Johannesburg you don't have problems with card skimmers anyway. You just wait for someone to withdraw cash, then shoot them.

pipojambo 11-25-2009 04:21 AM

Usually here when a banks put a new anti-skim device on the cash machine slot, they also make sure that the splash-screen on the ATM itself displays an image of the new device, explaining that its legit.

The NS (the train company here) upgraded all their ticket machines with anti-skim devices last week. Was a bit of a surprise when I rocked up at the train station at stupid-o-clock in the morning I have to say.....

Then again - it does not really matter if criminals attached card readers to the slot of an ATM anyway, provided you ensure you cover the keypad when typing your pin. The swiped card data is useless withour your pin.

Someone there would have known if an authorised technican had been there to upgrade the unit.

I dunno what kind of grocery store you worked at, but when I worked at Kroger nobody knew anything. The same goes for Walmart. At both places you could just wander into the backroom and walk out with stuff as long as you acted like you knew what you were doing. Nobody care about anything except their own job responsibilities, and even then only enough to not get fired.

Asking someone there if a tech worked on the ATM is like asking a 5 year old to do quantum physics.

Same thing when I worked at Sears. A couple of guys with a moving dolly came in and unmounted a large HDTV from the wall and wheeled it away. Everyone just thought that they were supposed to be there [rofl]
