Default Would You Take A Job If You Didn't Really Need The Money?
And do it just to cure boredom? Allow me to explain. I currently am self employed, and find myself with a lot of time on my hands. It's almost as if I purposely take my sweet time with the things I need to do to fill up a day and feel "fulfilled." Many would consider me to be lucky, but when everyone around you is working a 9 to 5, it's a bit lonely being the only one that I know with this type of schedule. I mean I literally wake up at 12pm and go to bed at 3 or 4am. Granted, while I always fill my day with activities like working out, biking, fishing, jogging etc., there still seems to be a part of me that yearns to do something more.

So essentially a management position became available at a local GNC. It'd be an easy job that would only require about 30 hours a week of my time, and it doesn't hurt that the GM of the store is pretty damn cute. Now the difficulty would be working for somebody else, since I haven't worked for anyone but myself in the last 7 years or so. Stocking shelves and managing a store would be a far cry in responsibility in what I normally do, especially since I handle every single facet. But maybe this might cure some boredom and provide a nice social atmosphere. Or maybe I'll quit in a week. Decisions.

Sure why not, when you can just walk away?

That is a good point, not having any strings attached would probably keep me there longer than feeling trapped. [yes]

If I won the lottery I would put away everything I need to live off the interest (and be very comfortable), blow the rest, quit my job, and find one I am happy at (after a 2 month vacation, minimum).

I would kill to have this lifestyle as a career. Teach me your ways. I shall be your apprentice!

As for the job issue, if it was me and I didn't need...HELL NO...I would be too lazy, however...the job would definitely make your day feel more interesting.

But I would still kill to have that lifestyle permanently

I'm pretty much the same way... On days I'm not needed, I just play games, go hiking, driving, skiing, shooting, et cetera.

Though it's driving my fiancee nuts! But I don't want to take anything on considering we could end up across the country after she matches for a residency. [surrender]

I wouldnt mind taking a PT job, I find myself at home doing just boring things.
I go rock climbing to kill time or go for a drive, and I cant wait for the slopes to open to go boarding.

Anyways, if u find yourself with more than 12 hours to yourself Id say go for it.[thumbup]

I was actually kind of thinking on this subject earlier today when I saw an older retired gentleman that I know working as a school crossing guard.

I'm sure it provides him some extra income, but it can't be enough to make it worth while, so why would someone do it?

If I recall too, some of those guys (at least in FL), don't even get paid. It's like 95 degrees out sometimes, and I can't imagine why someone wouldn't pick a different way to volunteer (or make a few bucks).

Thanks man. I guess the best advice I can give is to never be afraid of failing, and always start small. I've had businesses of mine not turn out as well. I had an online Cigar store get crapped on by last minute changes in legislation saying online sales of cigars were illegal (after already getting licensing from the state saying it was ok). The site was literally days from launching and we had to shut it down. Also, I had a website featuring semi-nude punk rock chicks ( I kid you not). I decided to relinquish my partial ownership of it after some disagreements with the other investors. I did not want to go down the porn path, they did, and I called it quits. I can't believe I just posted this on the internet, but oh ****ing well.

That's simple... do volunteer work. Heck, volunteer your time to a local school and write it off on your taxes!

I used to be in a similar situation some years ago, doing some freelance work at home, so i practically controlled my own time and i would say 80% of the time i would be doing the things i like to do. I could wake up in the afternoon and fall asleep in the morning...

but as you mentioned, it does get really lonely and boring since everyone else is caught up in the loop of working regular hours. working a regular 9-5 job like everyone else might seem really far more boring at first, but it helps you appreciate your free time a lot more.. and of course, some extra money never hurt anyone [yes]

You bring up some good points, and it goes along the lines of my way of thinking. However, I've quit nearly every job I've had due to not enjoying working for someone else, and my fear is that I'll commit to this, only to quit soon after.

Apparently they've been trying to fill this position for months to no avail. I was quite surprised that in this economy more people were not stepping up to the plate to make a decent amount of money.

Good idea, do the work for free, or donate the wages to charity! [thumbup] BTW horrible typos in the last post as was using opera mini.

Finland has quite good social security. I don't have to work at all because the money they give for me each month will fill my basic needs at the moment. I can pay my rent and other basic bills like electricity, water, basic house insurance. Every person must have 417 euros per month pure cash after these bills. Most think that it is too low for real life and I'm quite happy that clear majority thinks that way. Otherwise social security benefits might get heavily reduced or collapse.

I could work time to time, if there would be something I like. This is probably impossible, but I would like to have a job where you define, how many days per month you work. If you don't need full wage every month, you could skip days and get wage only from days you are working. This kind of job perhaps would require high/rare education so that partial wage could be enough.

In my opinion, it is quite sad that technology is going forward all the time and basic needs are covered with very low work force, but still people are busiest than ever, more needs are created all the time which create more work to serve people who suddenly think that they can't live without some bizzare new product or service. When these people then get bored with these new things and don't buy them, tons of people are sacked. New created job can come fast and end fast.
