I don't think you get what the iPhone is about yet. The beauty is in its simplicity. No fancy widgets, no endless lists of useless options for every application, it just does what you want it to do, efficiently and intuitively.

...and no T9 (text on 9 keys?!). Why would you need T9 when you've got a full keyboard

I think we've been so brainwashed by sloppy, poorly implemented phone UIs and apps that we've actually started believing they're a good thing.

Give it 3 days and you'll love it.

The full keyboard is not that big sometimes you end up pressing wrong keys, maybe i need to give it more time

Must admit that the lack of T9 is annoying and their version of predictive text just isn't very good, having said that I absolutely love mine and wouldn't swap it for anything else.

Strange, I rarely press the wrong key when typing, even in vertical orientation. Try turning it on it's side to make the keys bigger.

IMO the T9 system is way more annoying than a full keyboard. It's way too polite for a lot of the words I type so I usually end up keying them in manually [shocked]

With the typing...

First, forget about trying to correct words as you type them. Just keep typing the word you want to type and it should correct. Over time, the more you use the phone the better it gets at the prediction.

This seems to be a common first complaint from people that have been texting with a keypad for years. It's just a matter of trading up the old way with the new way. If you're a longtime smartphone user that has been tapping with the pen then it wont take you too long to get used to it.

I now simply refuse to use a keypad to text. It's been years since I've had a mobile with a keypad, and I can get a message out way faster using the iphones touch screen then I ever could using a keypad.

if you are a techie and like to modify everything and customize... then the iPhone is NOT for you. I hated my iPhone for numerous reasons... I loved my HTC WinMo phones but they were just as buggy as my iPhone... just customizable.. I like my nokia e71 but its really a business phone.. I LOVE Android... PERIOD... LOVE IT
I heard the BB Storms KB was lame... i thought it couldnt be any worse than the iPhone... Man i tried my co-workers bb storm by sending out emails on it for a few min... the typing is superior to the iphone because I don't make any mistakes. I put my finger on the screen and if it highlights the right key then i press down to click... keep finger on and slide it to the next letter and press down... fast and accurate.

You get used to the keyboard in no time.

If that's the only thing that's making you think it's rubbish then give it a few more days. It is the best gadget I've ever owned, bar none. I can't describe how much better it is than Windows Mobile. Unless you like tinkering with your Phone's OS purely for the sake of it of course. I personally wouldn't trade having the app store for any other phone.

Give it a few days, you'll get more used to it. Everyone is the same (that I have known with one). I started off really slow and kept making mistakes but after a week or so it's far better than any T9 keyboard.

I have used HTC phones for a long time (PDA and Smartphones), my last one being the HTC Touch HD. As soon as I got them I always wiped them and installed customs ROMs as they are always much better that the stock ones.

Thanks to a post on here I managed to get out of my Orange contract early and decided I might try the new iPhone 3GS as the specs were really good plus it had some nice apps that I wanted, finally had video recording and decentish camera, plus it seems everyone is making apps for it.

Never had the previous two as technically they were absolute crap (hardware wise) plus I needed my phone for proper sat nav use such as iGO or TomTom style apps etc.

So I went for it and I am so much happier, yes it doesn't have all the customisability of Windows and using custom ROMs but everything just works out of the box and works damn fast too.

If I wanted a new app I can try a new one in seconds thanks to the app store, installing apps through Windows Mobile really was a pain in the ass download cab files or syncing them via Active Sync with was unreliable then hoping they might work due to all the different screen resolutions and device specs, what a mess.

Will be sticking with the iPhone from now on as it's such a nice easy to use phone that works out of the box and has some amazing apps and has a very nice GUI.

As others have said, you will certainly get used to the keyboard. I can type with the screen in the portrait orientation faster on this phone than any other phone I have owned even with a physical keyboard. Out of curiosity how long have you actually tried to use it? I have heard plenty legitimate complaints about the phone but to me it seems like you tried it briefly and then you question it being rubbish before even giving yourself a chance to learn how to use it.

Niceone thanx, wheres the best place to get apps for it? and what about some satnav software?

Sat nav depends on what country you are in but if you do a search for it, there should be a few options, at least there are over here in the US.

Do you know whether he has the latest update? We have to use a BB Storm as our on call phone at work. I absolutely hate the keyboard but I have heard the latest update really improves the phone. I'm a bit hesitant to install it though in case I brick the on call phone. It's a pros vs cons thing. lol

Gotta agree with this comment. I had a iPhone 2G and loved it so much, I bought a 3GS. I will upgrade when the next version of the iPhone comes. I find mine invaluable. [thumbup]

Exactly what I was thinking. And if you think the keyboard is too small use it in landscape mode.

I've had my 2G iPhone a few months (got it on eBay) and love it! I'm probably going to upgrade to a 3G or 3GS soon, but I'm waiting to see what deals the new operators are going to do, or if O2 give a better deal because of the new competition.

Also jailbreaking it brings lots of new options.

It's easier to use T9 when using one hand, full screen needs two hands and in portrait mode the small keyboard is far to clumsy, unless you have small girly fingers you will make allots of mistakes to start with, can take a while to get used to it.

I still struggle with fullscreen at times, although thats usually after a few drinks.

Of course if you had big manly hands you could use landscape with one hand quite comfortably ...

I love typing on my iPhone, using two hands in landscape is obviously ideal and feels very natural. In portrait it is slightly awkward but I find if I'm having troubles holding down my finger until the correct button highlights resolves any problems.

Certainly didn't take me long to forget about T9 and found it completely alien when I used my friends' K800i (a phone I used to have and love) to text

The update is a must. It makes the phone so stable and yes my co-worker has it. Storm 2 is coming out in a week or two... I havent read about it but I have a co-worker who is going to purchase one at release. I'll see how that is, I heard way back that its just a faster (spec wise) storm 1.
Typing on my co-workers storm 1 is great IMO. I got used to the iPhones keybaord when in landscape mode but it would always slooooooooooooooooooooooooooow down and lag and then type everything at once after a pause.

That was addressed in a patch I believe a year or more ago.
