I'm curious whether this film is worth seeing as it's being released this weekend in the UK - but I'm afraid to read the past few pages for fear of spoilers.

So without giving anything away, is it worth going to see?

Sounds good to me

Will be having a trip to the cinema this week then. Unfortunately my girlfriend read a review comparing it to the X Files I Want To Believe movie and The Day The Earth Stood Still ... which is slightly unnerving. Will just have to drag her along anyhow [thumbup]

it actually a fairly stupid movie,
but still fun to see the old school B movie stuff they throw in.

Personally, I thought it was one of the best Sci-Fi movies in years, if not the best in the last decade. There's really nothing stupid about it, unless of course you didn't understand the undertones.

IMO scrap the mocumentary at the beginning. Extend the movie by like 30 minutes. Provide better / more details on the aliens, more backround. It was a good movie but it felt... "empty". I'm not even sure how to describe it outside of they could have easily added more content and made it a much better movie.

Just back from cinema, finally watched it.

Got the same expectation from previews, which its pretty good, at least something different.. as most alien movies.. are more to invasion.. @;p

I'll give 7.5/10 tomatoez for it... most points for the base storyline.

[possible spoilers]
=============
Anyways, not to sure what actually happened at the beginning.. i meant... why they hovering earth... while the humans wondered.. so long... till they basically break in the mothership and found aliens... err... dying(?)/mal-nutrition..

I watched "Alive in Joburg", something missing from the movie... the part the mothership has some kinda of huge cables in the nuclear reactor...

So... im guessing the aliens was stranded on earth for awhile since they "re-fueling" their mothership?..

And im confused.. the part, the aliens can make alot (very devastating) weapons and not to mention robots!... yet they do not use them against humans... as humans basically take their freedom away... and not to mention do "experiments" on them...

Cheers

i feel that they change the backstory after they already made the scene, they probably use the discarded material to make those trailers. in the movie, the mothership is non-functional and not operated, all to add the sense that the alien are less intrusive and at their mercy.

apparently they are that dumb. [rolleyes]
which is why the guy was surprised that Christopher show greater intelligence.
maybe they have a social caste and only a handful actually know what they are doing.

[Spoilers!]

One of the people "interviewed" in the movie said that they seemed to be the workers of the race and that the higher up's all died off. This accounts for their seeming lack of greater intelligence or initiative to rise up. Christopher must have been a pilot or navigator of sorts (he knew how to pilot the ship!) so was in a different class than the others hence the greater level of intelligence.

The Prawns are a 'hive' race. A few 'queen'-like entities(we're never shown them, i'm sure we'll see them in the sequel) control the thousands of 'worker drones', going from planet to planet and harvesting their resources so they can sustain life on their own. A disease killed off all the queens, but the worker drones were more resilient to infection(due to their very nature of life) and stayed alive. The mothership went into auto-pilot after the queens died and took them to the nearest planet that could sustain life(earth). The practically brainless drones stood in the mothership for months(years?) until the humans finally broke in and took them out.

You must be talking about a different movie.

That's not necessarily a problem with the movie. They don't have the numbers to sustain a fight. If they tried, they would just be bombed from up high. Plus, they weren't aware of the medical experiments.

Nope. This is the backstory according to writer/director Neil Blomkamp. I'm sure we'll see more of this when he does his sequel/supposed prequel.

District 10 will "probably" be the sequel and it will probably be out 3 years from now, precisely when the prawns come back from their homeworld--hopefully with reinforcements.

Yea, i was thinking the same abt the part first time Wikus talks to Christopher and implied hes the smarter ones.. lol

Btw, is it just me or the part a "Prawn" gets interrogate and ask them how does the weapons work.. something like that.. and the "Prawn" replied "we just want to go home"... something like that... has been cut from the movie..

[Spoilers!]

Not to mention, Christopher's son.. lol...

Pretty cool, the part the "Prawns" mentioned their planet its much bigger than earth and has 7 moons.. heh

Sounds.. plausible.. heh

Abt sequel.. hmmm.. i guess the part Christopher said "in 3-years, i will come back for u"... i guess that the hint?.. [rolleyes]... and yea... poor Wikus.. at least he got to "play" some awesome alien weaponary.. heh

Not to mention the last part... some say.. "Are they coming back?... for revenge?.." @... especially what they done experiments on those poor "Prawns"... funny tho.. those aliens looks more like "Locusts" to me... hmmm...

Cheers

I guess Wikus will be like ambassador for Earth since they come back for him to "change" him back to human... [rolleyes]
