Default Need advice: Say your neighbour is a inconsiderate prick...
I live in an apartment complex, 2 flats below, 2 above. Below are vacant, upstairs is me and the other flat is this young couple.

Now our flats have heavy doors, and since they moved in a month ago, they constantly slammed their door, during the day, even coming home at 4-5am, and since our front doors are less than 5 meters from the others front door, you can imagine how easy one will jump from their sleep when the doors are slammed.

so about a week after they moved in, I thought I'd nip it in the bud and go talk to them. I spoke to the husband and asked him to kindly not slam his door since it's very loud and wakes me up. He acted like he wasn't aware it was that disturbing but said ok no problem. I also don't believe they do it on purpose, it's just how they are, they don't realize that living in apartments, is different to houses, and you have to have a little consideration for your neighbours.

Anyway a week passed since the talk and now they are doing it again, every now and then I am woken up at midnight onwards by their constant door slams.

Now before they moved in, I used to play my music loud since I had no neighbour below me and no one upstairs next to me. Since they moved in, I listened to my music on my headphones at night since I didn't wanna disturb them.

Anyway, seeing that they really don't give a ****, a couple of days ago I started listening to my music loud on my 6 speaker pioneer home theater sytem, and I'm the bass literally vibrates the whole place. I thought if they don't want to compromise and be considerate, **** it, I'll play the noisy neighbour game too till they understand.

I decided that whenever they slam their door and wake me up, I'm going to turn my **** up and keep them up too, and if they come to my door, I'll simply say you stop slamming your door and waking me up and we won't have this problem.

So my question is, how would you deal with this situation?

I could complain to the leasing office but I mean what can they do? They can't enforce a no-door-slamming rule on these idiots.

Thoughts?

You may be able to put some of that sponge foam draft stuff where the door goes against the frame to dampen it a bit.
Or some contact adhesive ...

Remove their door and replace it with a rubber one or a curtain.

tbh they seemed nice enough to comply the first time and I guess it's just a natural thing for them. And if the door doesn't line up properly with the wall then it can be difficult to close. I know from experience and half the time I have to slam the damn thing to shut it or apply extra force which is what they could be doing.

You should go over and wreck their day! No one should disturb a mans sleep!

I would not advice an escalation of rudeness to each other. Bad things can start to happen.

I would recommend one of these.

Though there are many other designs. You could get the landlord to install one if it solves a valid complaint.

I'm blasting hard-fi right now. ****ing inconsiderate prick.

**** him, if they want to go down this road, I'm ready.

They are the noisy neighbours, even after asking nicely to be more gentle with the door, they continue and I'm the worse person for giving them a taste of their own medicine? I disagree with you.

You've spoken to them once about it, have you thought of maybe.... speaking to them a second time?

Just explain to them that you are happy to pay 5 bucks for some of that foam trim stuff as it really is disturbing your sleep! Also they may just need to adjust the hinge strut to take more of the load a little ealier.

In the apartment I used to live in the same thing happened, the couple down a few doors used to be going in and out all night on Saturdays. A quick 5 mins of showing them how to adjust the strut and it was fixed. They where happy as well as it annoyed them because they often where carrying things and just could not stop the door from slamming. It's because the doors have to be fire proof and are as heavy as hell.

Move. Best thing you could ever do. Get a house or something. When lived in an apartment the neighbor would vacuum at 5 am in the morning, and it sounded like they were dropping bowling balls.

Just play your music!

Though only problem with that, is it will further keep you awake was well.

Though you must be a light sleeper? Kind of sucks.

Seems like life is just going to suck from living in these apartments unless you are able to buddy buddy with these people.

Simply go speak to them again---I know it is a pain, but everyone at times has issues with maintaining consistency for the long haul, so again even though you said something to them I would suggest saying it again and then if it gets worse discuss with the landlord as this could cost them a tenant and even future tenants...and if this doesn't clear up then it's time to do some house hunting or a new apartment.

i think you escalated the situation a little quick. maybe he forgot, or comes home loaded, it's pretty easy not to think about it then. honestly, I feel sorry for a lot of my neighbors when i was in college and soon after. Anyways, not sure how old they are or if they go to the pub everynight, but if this is the case, they may just be shitfaced, and not think about it. If you keep asking nicely and they keep doing it though, maybe he's just a prick. I would tread lightly untill I know the guys a ******** and doing it on purpose, and then if he is, I'm 100% with you. Kick his fecking door in if you have to.

I don't like inconsiderate people either. I would have talked to them a couple of more times and nicely asked them not to slam it. After 3 or 4 times being polite and aksing them though, if it kept going on.....I would proceed exactly like you have. I do think you maybe escalated it a little quick.

anyways, i'm mostly sympathetic with you. I try to be the nicest guy in the world untill someone like that comes along and refuses to be considerate. After that, all bets are off.

also, just thought i'd add, apartments suck! I hated living right on top of other people. At first opportunity, buy or rent your own house, you'll be glad you did. I like being able to crank 7.1 sound for games, music, movies, whenever I want. More importantly, I like a little bit of privacy. When i come home after a long day, or leave the house half a sleep at 6 am, I don't like having to see or hear a half a dozen people before i get into the car or in the house. Don't get me wrong, I'm friendly with everyone, but sometimes I just don't like neighbors watching my every move. I've got this older couple that live across the street though, that are constantly sitting in their front yard. Everytime I walk out my front door they're staring me right in the face. Hard to explain, but it's a little annoying. Nice people though. That pales in comparison though, to lying in bed at night and hearing people stomp on the ceiling or hearing people come home at all hours of the night.

Hmm well after my first post got deleted (for no reason at all, i mean ffs, it was meant in a humorous way and even had a white text)
Let me say this,
Maybe your neighbor is thinking, damn that ****ing punk is turning his **** up loud again, without even really noticing that their initiating it.

well you can't just let people walk all over you all the time. sometimes it's not about revenge, it's about giving people a taste of thier own medicine. I think it should always be a last resort, but some people are just miserable, inconsiderate fecks, and they need to be dealt with; not sit back and have them walk all over you.

what I would do in this instance is wait until they are asleep then screw a couple of metal plates top and bottom to the door to the apartment so that they cannot open it, then get a dry ice machine and start pumping smoke under the door and then smack the fire alarm on the way out to work [yes]
