The Queen is pretty much a figurehead in the commonwealth.. But like Canada, Australia would have a boat load of paperwork to do in rewriting all their laws so they keep to tradition. It's such a massive undertaking and would take many years. The Govenor General acts as the Queen's Representive but again it's mostly ceremony except in rare cases (we nearly had that happen here last winter) where she/he is called upon to disolve parliment ( only happens with minority governments ) when the house loses confidence in ability of the party in power to govern.
The Queen is also (I believe) the head of the Anglican Church... Again mostly as a figurehead. In theory she owns alot of land here in Canada and thru-out the commonwealth.. and while it would never happen if she wanted to press that claim we'd all be screwed (from a legal standpoint). Again .. In theory .. She's probably the richest person in the world.. Definitely the richest woman and most likely the most powerful if she ever wanted to excercise that power. Which she won't. (would cause a stink and could see the monarchy abolished or wars happen as royalists and federalists side off) |

People say she brings tourists here, but I think more come to see her houses than her. But compared to the pope, she only brings in a small crowd. |
