Actually, I work for the company that owns the cargo.

$1.5 million decided 15 ways is only $100k each which hardly sounds worth it. Even if they sell the ship for scrap in some 3rd world country you're only talking a couple of hundred thousand more which is also divided 15 ways. Not worth risking life in prison imo.

Maybe the real cargo was snitching on Keyser Soze.

Their families are apparently all back in Russia and I don't think they would abandon them just like that. So the crew is not in on it, but there could be an inside man.

I think there really was a hijacking, but the hijackers stayed on the ship. The information that they left was disinformation to allow them to escape to the Atlantic where they wouldn't be so easily found.

Whatever the ransom sum, it probably is about money in the end. On the other hand, Russia is involved so anything's possible.

I applaud Russia's unique ability to create bizarre, enigmatic situaties. Piracy in the Baltics? 5 warships hunting a ship loaded with timber? Other weird factors? It's awesome. Hopefully the situation will remain unresolved so Hollywood can make a movie out of it.
Oh God. Not another movie about the Russian mafia? Have the Crips, Bloods, MS-13, Mafia, Columbians and Mexicans all just vanished off the face of the Earth?

So far, this story seems so full of bullshit, I don't know what to believe.

One rumour is saying that the pirates want a ransom of 1.5 million dollars, which is to be divided by the number of pirates (probably about 10), plus a bonus for their boss. Say each man will get 100 000 $

That sounds really desperate. Why risk a lifetime in prison, or even death penalty or getting killed in combat, for 2-5 years worth of normal salary in their home country?
Maybe they had faulty intelligence. Maybe they thought the ship had electronics or medicines or bullion. Only when they grabbed the ship did they find out, "Damn, it's wood!"
