Exploding Apples

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20090803/...i-45dbed5.html

Seems like bad news every 2 mins for Apple. It notes about a case in america about exploding Ipod touch on the go to. Need to take my iphone back as only just bought it and already having an issue with the screen light not coming on properly sometimes, which appears from research quite common.

I'm sure they were caused by the li-po battery (I was told the apples have a li-po battery). I'm also pretty sure they are 1 cell li-po and normally 1 cel li-po batteries don't explode that violently. I've seen 3c Li-po batteries DESTROY RC cars... like a bomb.
I mean the kit had it in his pocket... maybe he fell on it and as for the article it said it was dropped. Sometimes if the impact is bad enough the li-po batteries will be dented/damaged and if it is a big enough dent then it will become unstable and explode during use/charge.

That's what happened when you get the scientests who worked on jet packs working to make your ipods smaller.

The devices were probably abused. I wonder how many have blown up through normal use.

Doesn't matter if the device was abused or not. If a device could explode from even an accidental drop, then it's still a problem with the device.

What if someone took perfect care of their ipod and had it hooked up to their stereo in their car. Now out of the blue, another car comes crashing into them accidentally and that ipod goes flying around inside the car and crashes against something forcefully. Wouldn't you be worried if that ipod was now a ticking time bomb? That's a secondary hazard that should not exist.

I'll wait until they figure out exactly what happened, but I doubt it was accidental droppage causing it.

He said: ''I threw it out of the back door and within 30 seconds it exploded. It went 10ft in the air.'' The dude chucked it out the back door.

Could be defective batteries, but it doesn't seem to be all that common. One person's ipod burnt a hole in a pair of pants, and the other person's went up like a firecracker.

Lipo battery....

my dad crashed his model glider once....as he ran to pick it up the model exploded....[rofl]

your not supposed to drop em so why they put em in models is beyond me and the battery he had in it was fooken massive and all that my dad had left of the model was the wing tips tail plane and the radio hand set the fuselage was obliterated [shocked]

i've had a couple of ipod's and they both broke. i did run one over with the car, but regardless i thought the durability was poor. both my brothers have had them fail as well as any friends who have them too. none have exploded as far as im aware though. im sure its a rareity, but its not good.

Li-po is more efficient in space/weight compared to other batteries. the problem is that they become unstable if discharged at a high amperage or charged at high amperage (temperature control) and physical damage to the cels.
a 3s Li-po can provide 11.1v 1800mAh+ (i've seen 6500mAh and those ****ers BLOW UP and get hot) compared to a similar sized 6cell Ni-Mh that can only supply 7.2v plus at the same size and weight. ni-mh doesnt last as long (overall life time is lower).
