Elephant is the only European Malt Liquor I've ever had.

Default Carlsburg Elephant
Does anyone drink this beer? Looking for an opinion on it and I don't know much about it since its Danish. Had some a few days ago. It is a higher priced beer here compared to the local brews and big manufacturers.

well it doesn't get a very good Beer Advocate rating.

I'll be honest and I'm not being snobby, but I'm pretty sure the best beer in the world is being brewed right here in the USA nowadays.

I have obviously struck a nerve and you are obviously confused by our mass produced crap.

I brought the wine reference up because the same ignorance and pride you are now showing was the same then except in refrence to wine.

I dont know about the elephant, but I am pretty sure that the best beer I have ever had is a locally brewed beer called battlefield bock made by a company called red oak. I have only had it on tap before so I cant vouch for it out of a bottle.

I love Carlsberg full stop no matter what it is, the standard cheaper shite lager is pretty much my drink of choice.

But yeah I have had plenty of Elephant beer over the years too, and somewhat unsurprisingly I like it a lot. It has that same "session" quality taste to it whilst also being somewhat stronger... 7.x%.

Check it out, I think you may well like it.

Carlsbad Elephant = 7.2% alcohol. Most american beer I buy is in the 7%-11% ABV range. I've never had it, so I can't say in terms of flavor if it's stronger than a good American IPA, stout, strong ale, or barleywine, but based on it being a lager, I highly doubt it.

And I have to agree with american beers being some of the best in the world.

http://beeradvocate.com/top_beers

It dominates the rankings on that page, so I don't stand alone in that respect.

What people like will be conditioned by what they first started drinking - so some are going to like American beers, some European, some Asian, etc - and some the New Zealand/Australian beers.
Whilst on that topic, some will like ales, some lagers, some draught, some stout, etc.

As for the twit that dismissed wines as a drink - I generally prefer the range of flavours and being able to tailor the drink to the meal/occasion - and ABV is commonly well into the 20% range which makes beers weak in comparison.
BTW, I was of the impression that the common US beers were in the 3-4 percent range, tops

Actually the USA has some great wines. And some local, small breweries (the one I tested was in St. Petersburg, Texas) brew some pretty good beer. All the bigger breweries are producing crap though. I was "forced" to become a Coors drinker overseas, and when I came back the first "real" beer after a year of drinking piss hit me like a hammer and gave me that "aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh" feeling again.

Edit: The name of the Town was Fredericksburg. Heh.

Good point, the micro/botique breweries seem to be getting more and more popular as the focus seems to be more on taste and quality, rather than quantity.

What is considered a micro brewery ?
I´ve heard that term around here a few times
Are small breweries with low production quantities meant ?

It's pretty much an establishment that brews it's own beers. They generally don't produce more then their own needs.
