Default Tax rebates in the UK
Anyone know how tax rebates are worked out, I got made redundant in Dec and was sure I should have got a tax rebate, do tax rebates come automatically or would I have to claim for it.

Cheers

Were you employed again prior to the end of the 08/09 tax year?

I'm fairly sure you would need to file a tax return to get a rebate if you had been PAYE.

You get the tax rebate automatically at the end of the tax year which is April

You have to request tax back yourself. very rarely do the revenue automatically repay you for your overpayment of tax.

Fill out P50 from the HMRC website & send to your local tax office.

Indeed, HMRC will rarely (I'd say never! :P) chase you to give you a refund, they will however hunt you down to the end of the Earth if you owe them anything.

Cheers, just got the form now, I wonder what happens to all the overpaid tax money, i've been made redundant a few times and never claimed tax back, just think, my excess tax payments could have paid for some MP's flower pots or sex aids in expense claims
