What are the best file settings for transferring CDs to an iPhone?

Getting the quality/file size ratio correct. I've got 16 albums and a 16GB iPhone to play with.

Unless you have upgraded the iPhone stock headphones significantly then anything over 192kbps will make no difference.

Like he said! Forgot to ask BTW is this your 1st iPhone? what do you think so far? I've had mine 2 months and I already think it's the only phone I'll ever want from now on. [thumbup]

I usually rip them to 256kbps as I listen on my PC and PS3 too. I'd prefer to do lossless, but that really kills the amount I can fit on the iPhone.

What about file format? Should I got for MP3 or what?

Yep, my first! I've only had it about a week but I think it's brilliant! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/cool1.gif

I encode in MP3. Ensures compatibility between players.

OK, thanks for the advice, guys. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/smile1.gif

It is the daddy. To be honest it's the apps that make it what it is. Without the success of the app store I reckon competitors may have taken it. Apple broadsided everyone clean out of the water with that one.

I just can't imagine anything getting better than it. Every time you think someone is catching up Apple release an OS or hardware upgrade and it's back to square one.

a 320 kbps MP3 is more than enough, unless you got a source that is properly mastered which is very unlikely

compatibility and battery saving encoding are benefits of MP3

Although AAC will give you longer battery life.

I would use the highest VBR AAC or MP3 setting, either of those will give you the best file size to audio quality ratio.

Yeah, i use 320kb VBR as well with all of my CDs. I really can't tell the difference between 320/256 on my computer. And I have only found a few songs that I THINK I can hear a difference in a spot or two, but that could be my imagination. I can hear more differences if I compare the CD's to the MP3s but not often. 320kb/s is pretty much CD quality for the average person.

What is the benefit of VBR over CBR? I usually rip my CD's at 320 CBR... http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/unsure1.gif

There is very little difference between 320kbps and V0 (highest bit rate VBR) if need be the bitrate can reach 320kbps but usually hovers around 256-280kbps. You would be hard pressed to notice a difference. Since VBR is variable, you can save on space with pretty much identical performance.

Am I right in thinking that VBR reduces file size because it somehow "recognizes" parts that don't (and do) need to be encoded at the high setting? If space was not a concern of mine, is sticking with CBR fine?

More or less that is what it does and if space isn't a concern then you are fine sticking with 320kbps CBR.
