So, why's Diesel so cheap now?

Last year when Oil was at it's peak Diesel was selling for almost a dollar more than Regular Gas. These days there are several places around here where Diesel is selling for less than than Regular. I checked with my father and he said the same sort of situation has occurred in the UK and the price difference there is as small as he ever remembers since driving a Diesel car.

Does anyone know the reason for this shift, it's just been puzzling me.

In the UK diesel was always much cheaper than petrol.. then diesels became the in thing when they stopped being noisy, smelly and slow so they bumped the price up. It's pretty static, a couple of pence above petrol.

Diesel in Holland has always been cheaper than regular fuel. But the taxes per month on the car are alot higher than what regular fuel based cars pay.

Diesel is also alot easier to produce than regular fuel.

Right now the average price of a liter diesel is 0,92 Euro, while regular is about 1,30 Euro per liter.

Not really sure why. All I can think is that supply is plentiful.

Less semis on the road? Less people flying? Very few people own diesels in the states.

I noticed this morning that diesel is like 8 cents cheaper than regular now. Freaking awesome!!! Has been like 10 cents more lately. At its peak was almost $1 more, but even at $1 more, with the current diesel offerings, it was still slightly cheaper to run a vehicle on diesel than the petrol counterpart.

Though I would not be surprised to see if diesel goes up in price here soon. At least here, diesel price wise, is a much more stable fuel. Instead of changing on a daily basis, sometimes even twice a day, it only changes once a week to two weeks.

I am hoping that Subaru will bring their diesel state side. I want to get a Diesel Forester the day that it comes out! [thumbup]

96p litre for Petrol and 106p litre for Diesel now.

Shame that is. Modern diesel engines ( audi is leading!!) and with it's specially fine-particle filter in the exhaust it is one of the best fuel-type engines on earth.

Don't forget a diesel also has alot more torgue in low revs and maximum HP at low revs., less fuel consumption.[thumbup]

That subaru has a boxter diesel, doesn't it?

It could be related to light heating oil demand, considering that is the same as diesel

NickGrass 05-07-2009 06:50 AM

my guess is that a large number of the owner/operators went out of the transport business since last summer, lowering the deman for diesel,

Yeah. I think that this is supposed to be the first boxter diesel.

I actually road, in one of the new luxury models, I think Mercedes with a diesel. Usually I can tell right off the bat if it is diesel or not. Hoped in, and was like "Wow, 28mpg average in this SUV!? That is better than their hybrid gets." I thought nothing of it. Just a damn good eco-driver. Only way that I was able to tell it was a diesel was the some 4,000rpm redline. The thing was silent, even standing outside of it.
Though, myself, I don't mind the sound of a diesel. I think that diesels sound freaking awesome to begin with. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/devil1.gif

Another nice thing about diesel is that it can run almost on anything. Armageddon comes, you are more prepared. Less demand for the fuels you are searching for, thus having to kill less people to get your resources. lol.
There is also a diesel fuel maker called I think the Diesel Fuel Miester. Something a long those lines. Costs only $3,000, makes 40/gals even 24hrs with only 30 minute human input time and the fuel costs 50 to 70 cents a gallon.
I would end up getting this. Might be able to split the cost of it as my step-dad owns two diesel tractors.

Me I'd like a Mazda 3 Turbo Diesel.

violetgorman 06-06-2009 08:02 AM

Diesel is 79 cents per litre here, gas is 104 cents per litre.

Slight difference but half a year ago Diesel was 104 and gas was 79. Diesel always goes up to gas price levels eventually sometimes it takes a while but it does happen. [thumbup]

One thing you've got to remember is that diesel isn't a good choice for all climates. Where I'm from (northern US, practically Canada) diesel freezes, even the blended stuff, so it's not a feasible replacement for gasoline. Many farmers and ranchers out here do use diesel in their pickups but most of them end up having to garage their vehicle or leave it running 24/7, from about October to May! [rofl]

My grandpa had a new Dodge diesel pickup a few years ago and loved it, but eventually ended up trading it for a gas pickup because he got tired of it not starting during the coldest months.

Diesels are the future. My sister has a civic 2.2 diesel (the nice european shape, not the weird US concoction) and it flies. My dad has a Range Rover diesel (to be honest continental drift gets off the line with more vim) but you can't tell inside and it's a nice place to be and I have a 5 year old golf diesel which still goes pretty well. It's time for an upgrade now though my mortgage payments have eased off a bit. Not sure what yet but definitely another diesel.

Co-incidentally picked up this copy of Popular Hot Rodding this morning - partly because the darned car looked so good - and for $250,000 I would hope so http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/blink1.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/blink1.gifhttp://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/blink1.gif

Here Diesel is currently about 25 cents cheaper (per litre!) than fuel. Awesome! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/excited1.gif

About the whole "is a Diesel car the better choice" thing... for me it definately is. It has alot more torque than a similiar powered petrol car, so its more fun to drive it. I have an average consumption of 6.3l per 100km (equals MPG US: 37,3 and MPG UK: 44,7) which is freakin great for the fun it makes to drive the thing.

And it has a diesel particulate filter, so it does the Euro 4 norm.

I pay 308€ tax for the car, a simliar powered pertrol car would cost me 124€. But I save more than 600€ per year (better mileage, cheaper gas price). This year I drove 30.000km, but it starts to be a better deal from 20.000km per year.

Diesel cars still cost more, but when you buy a one year old vehicle (which I always do), the price differnence is almost non existant.

If you imagine how many billions of barrels of oil could have been saved if all cars were running on Diesel...
With normal driving ( accel and speeding) I got 500Km on half a tank of diesel. That's about 1000k for 45€ of diesel. Let a regular fuel car try that..
Or drive 65km/h in 5th gear with 1200rpm.. and it drives smooth!!

Diesel engines runs sooo nice.. it is underrated. And in todays world, with the newer tech and emission filter , they are cleaner than a regular fuel car as well.

2,000lb ft torque? That's spectacularly needless. That's enough torque to move Australia. I want one.
