Manchester United have accepted a world record offer of £80m from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo.
"United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player," said a statement from the English club.
It added that the decision came at Ronaldo's request after he "again expressed his desire to leave".
United described the offer for the 24-year-old forward as unconditional and added that they expected the matter to be concluded by 30 June.
It is understood that the transfer fee would be made available for manager Sir Alex Ferguson to invest in the transfer market.
Madrid signed Brazilian Kaka for a reported £56m earlier in the week, surpassing the previous world record fee of £45.6m Real paid for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

I think it´s ridiculous that around the world there´s a financial crisis going on, left and right people are loosing their jobs, but still people accept the fact that millions and millions of dollars are being thrown out of the window to get someone chase a stupid ball.

If people weren't willing to spend as much on sports and entertainment, these people would be paid less.

some country spends a trillion dollar on their military despite their economy imploding.. i doubt short-term economic conditions change how people 'invest' their money. not unless we recognised this is going to be a long-term decline, i like to poll how many people think this is the case?

I think what i´m trying to point out here is the acceptance and priority of some things going on in the world today.
And of course only football/soccer fans will understand/defend such ridiculous amounts of money being spent for something as trivial.
