Default Price of Smoking
So we all know smoking has went up a dollar more a pack.................

I would like to know your thoughts on this. Will the extra dollar make you stop smoking, etc. I think they should tax alcohal also. We just have way too many loop holes today. Still say this world needs a reboot!

Good Day

Where are you? People continue to smoke here reguardless of the high taxes, inability to smoke within 20ft of bars, certain public places, etc. So no I don't think people are going to give it up.

the thing is, the justification is that the money will be used to pay for smoking related illnesses. Smokers cost less to the system than the obese or healthy... more in the short, short term for sure, but cheaper than a healthy person who gets normal maladies in their 60's that are treated for 20 years as they age, and much, much cheaper than an obese person who gets diabetes in their 30's and dies in their 60's. Smokers get sick and die in three yrs on avg, which is a win in the long term for healthcare costs.

The county where I live started a poured drink tax (alcohol) a little while ago in order to help bring in funding for Pittsburgh's crappy mass transit which was losing money like crazy. Maybe if they would stop cutting bus routes, and added more routes aside from the pure inbound / outbound routes, they wouldn't have these problems.

Those measures actually do work to reduce consumption of cigarettes. Price increases also work very well to curb binge drinking of young people. But I am certain that politicians only look at the increase in revenue.

They want to get tough on smoking I am all for it. Outright ban the sale of cigarrettes. Enough of this BS of taxing the hell out of people and trying to justify it because their not fooling anyone. (smokers and non smokers alike)

They've been doing that in the UK for years, people still smoke. I'd imagine we pay far more than you for smokes too.

Exactly,if it was about people's health they would make them illegal and be done with it,instead they increase taxes and have little psychological tricks they pull to get MORE people to smoke.

what's a smoker do when they're stressed? Why they smoke MORE of course.

Okay, but then they should tax sweets and fast food alot higher too. And bungee jumping...

I am a non smoker, I never smoked, but I think this is ridiculous. I stay away from people who smoke (when they smoke, not in general lol), and thats good enough for me. Since all restaurants have to have non smoking areas I'm fine with the whole issue. Let smokers smoke.

Sounds good to me. If a salad was cheaper than a double quarter pounder with cheese combo we might have fewer fat people. The city I used to live in had an extra 1% sales tax on fast food.

I think you're the only non-smoker who I've ever saw write something like this...nice (I only have the occasional cig, not a 5-10 a day smoker anymore).

So £5.65 per 20 isn't enough?

why? it's not like its something vital.
I'm quite sure if they'd up the price to $100 a package nobody would even get addicted to smoking in the first place.. eventually resulting in no smokers and no whining people about the price being so high.

Correct, I am not part of the cool club, spending their days sucking on fags.

Lots of things are disgusting habits that shouldn't exist. What have you got against smokers? As far as I'm concerned they can kill themselves if they like, as long as it doesn't affect me.
