Default Car Tyres
I've just bought some second hand alloys off of ebay for the car, picked them up on Saturday in Bristol. A steal at £10 for 4 with 2 good tyres.

They have 2 mint condition with 6mm tread enduro 606 and 2 flat tyres with 2-3mm tread. Already on the car I have 2 Mitchlin tyres with good tread. I'd like to take the michelins and put them on the alloys, but the sizes are slightly different.

The enduros are 185 60 r14

the michelins are 185 65 r14.

Is it legal to have the enduros on the front and the michelins on the rear?

I have on my bmw

a front set of 40's

and a rear set of 35's

it helps with the stance of the car and is not Illegal.

only thing that will make the tyres Illegal is if you shoe horn different rim size tyres.

remember though put your best tyres on the front as it will improve handling

so I'd put the mitchelins on the front which works out nicely with what you have stated above

that's a myth.... best tyres should always go on the back. (for safety reasons).

you are both wrong. best tires go to the driving axle

meaning, if it's a FWD, they go to the FRONT
if its a RWD, they go to the back
and if its a AWD , usually to the back as it has 55 vs 45 percent driving force on most cars.
thanks [yes]

nope your wrong haha

its all to do with what the drivers gotten used to so if you suddenly use new wheels on the front the drivers not used to the grip and the wheels are out of balance grip wise and if he has to brake in an emergency the rears will spin him well thats what I could work out

thats right aint it kyrosme ole chum

no your wrong.

you'd think that because you steer with front and thats also the way the break balance is shifted that you'd want best tyres on the front....

however for safety reasons, this is wrong. michellin, goodyear etc say so...

anyway the enduro's have more thread so he can still use the set up the way I explained it without this tyre issue

be sure to put them on correctly with the directional arrows pointing in the direction or travel

actually on that goodyear site it says " When radial tires are used with bias or bias belted tires on the same car"

what about if only one kind is used?

and besides im a mechanic ive been doin this for quite some time and every place i went to does the same thing. Best tires on the driving axle.

by your theory i could take my bald tires and put them on the front ( even if its a fwd ) and good ones on the rear... wat good will that do to my traction when i press the gas? i wont move.

and what good would it do to my brakes if my front brakes are stronger than my rear? meanin i should have better traction on my front wheels if they have better brakes.. if i have good brakes with shitty tires, they will lock up right away so my brakes will be pointless.

checked the michelling site...

strange stuff... altho i can not agree with them, as i test drive cars every day when i change tires and notice the difference. They state that it changes the balance point if you are 'unaware'. What do they have to say for fwd acceleration with shitty tires then? ur tying to make a left on a yelow and can't because ur wheels keep spinning, only to be struck by a 18 wheeler. and its damn impossible to spin out in a fwd anyways lol

have you ever seen a formula one car. they have bald tyres and don't exactly struggle to move.

the goodyear site also says...
When you select a pair of replacement tires in the same size and construction as those on the car, we recommend you put them on the rear axle. you also can't ignore what michellin say. please find a reputable source that proves me wrong, other than your mechanic experience. my mechanic was wrong also.

i worked at 5 different mechanic shops in my little 3 years of experience and every single shop does it the way i describe it. So according to michellin, and goodyear all mechanic shops are wrong...

and if that is the case, then be it. Ill change ur tires wrong then

but on a serious note.. whatever the case may be, i do not know why so many shops do it wrong still.

If you value your center differential in an AWD car you should never run a pair of different sized tires or a pair that are worn much worse rather than just put the good tires on the back you should put good tires all around.

well I'm also a mechanic by trade and an Aircraft Technician and I still got it wrong.

the misconception came about from what I can gather because people wanted to swap the tyres so that they have equal wear.

I had the rears changed on my beemer and basically BMW refused to swop the new tyres on the rear for the front ones which were a good 5 mm of meat.

his reasoning was that it would Impact on the vehicles Handling

I looked at him a bit miffed but now I understand [yes]

winter driver here and i would NEVER put the good tire in front. it would result in a spin for sure.
front will stop but the back wont, resulting in something bad.
