IT support/technicians - advise needed
 
Hey all, looking to get a recognised qualification/certificate in some sort of IT support related subject but I don't want to end up doing a course thats too easy or not really recognised. My employeer will foot the bill and could stretch to a 5 day course. So far I'm looking at A+ and MS Certified Desktop Support Technician. Out of these which would be best? Are there others I can consider?

Getting a MS qualification is always good. I am taking my Windows Server 2008 Active Directory exam at the end of the month so I will let you know how it goes http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/smile1.gif

MS course is more recognised but the A+ is still a decent course, I did the 5 day and it was an excellent time, stayed in a hotel all food paid for by my company (Not booze unfortunately). If I had the choice I'd go for the MS though

A+ is a complete waste of time TBH dose anyone really need to know the pin configuration of a serial cable anymore.

Yeah I was leaning towards the MS course, sounded a bit basic though, any other similar courses you guys been on?

No one gives a crap about A+. I bought a book on it and looked at it as a complete joke! There is just so much rubbish in there the one doesn't need to know unless you're an electrical engineer and need to know about cable pins etc. In which basic A+ type knowledge is assumed and other qualifications are more prevalent in that field.

For IT Helpdesk or Systems/Network engineering it's useless. It wont help you a single bit.

I've never seen a job Advertised in Australia looking for A+. Seems to only a US thing. You're much more valuable doing MCITP (Microsoft).

I've been in IT industry for nigh on 14 years now and my advice is DON'T, it's full of muppets who think they know more than they do, people overly paid for what they do and also... it's the dullest job in the world. I'd dig roads if I could get paid what I do in IT... and that's being honest. Don't waste your life, do something useful and put something back into the world...

lol... IT isn't that bad, but yeah sometimes I think there are more personally satisfying jobs out there. However I know IT so I guess that's what I'm sticking to for now.

Is a 5 day course like a 3 hour tour? Take both and get your employer to foot the bill. I'll reserve my comment's on how usefull they actually are...
