Default Where to shop for gear in Manhattan?
Hi All,

I'm flying to Manhattan for a short week the 15th.

With the low prices in the US on computer gear I'll probably pick up some upgrades, not a 24" screen (will be hard to fit in the suitcase ) but some cards, ram, hdd, games, movies,etc...

So where do I need to go over there?

I'll be staying in the Meridien Le Parker, on 57th.

Thanks [thumbup]

Great idea, but I'm only there for 5 days so if there's any delay I'm f****d

So I'd rather go in a real store.

I checked BestBuy's website and only the Corsair ram is already 1/3 of the price of what I would pay in Belgium
Velociraptor is 50€ cheaper, that's 1/5 of the price, hmmm I feel a Velociraptor Raid-0 comming up

You will get raped if you go to a store like Best Buy or Circuit City. Poor selection, stupid salespeople, and high prices. I don't know anyone that actually buys computer parts in a store here in the US. Parts are about 20% cheaper online.

If you're lucky do the "rush order" ($3) and it'll ship that day, and maybe it'll ship from the New Jersey warehouse (right next to New York). If they estimate delivery beyond 2 days, you could always overnight it.

Even if you buy for yourself, keep in mind that there is a chance you will get searched and end up paying tax.

Either that or order it online before you leave and tell the hotel you will have a package arriving and it may arrive before you get there. I'm sure they will hold it for you.

USELESS! From top to bottom.

NYC is not good AT ALL for PC hardware. You would think it would be, but it sucks... really really badly.

I won't be taking anything large with me back from NY so no risks there, and I've never been searched in 30y travelling.

Anyway, we'll see how I sort stuff out with Newegg.

Thanks for the advice all

It's still funny, I just checked bestbuy.com and here is an example:

LG Blu-Ray Drive: 199$ - in belgium: 209€

199$ / 1.53(rate eur-dollar) = 130€

That's 79€ gain, not bad

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1208562591968

http://www.tones.be/shop_product.php?idx=105185

And here's Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827136137 : 269$

Am I missing something?

The one on Newegg also plays HD-DVD's... I might have to pick one of these up [surrender]

This would be a more comparable drive.
