My Infrared webcam mod

I started with a viewsonic v5205 webcam, and took it apart with a little difficulty as the case is very tight, the problem with the IR filte ron this is that its built very close to the lens.

While bing very carefull i smashed the glass ir filter out and cleaned it up and put the pcb back into the casing

After that i then used a slice from a old color negative i had and placed this infront of the lens and screwed the front back on

Here is the result from a quick glance outside, on a plus note i can see through my GF's top and can see her bra and breasts easily lol

Cool mod

If you could be so kind as to send a link to that other pic via PM it would be greatly appreciated, just to see how well your mod works of course http://discussworldissues.com/forums...s/biggrin1.gif.

Well done on getting the filter out without trashing the camera - I've lost count of the number of webcams I've knackered trying to do this. It can also be done with digital cameras too (the cheaper, the better) and can be a bit easier, since you have more room to work with. There's something quite spooky at firing a TV remote at a camera and being able to see the "light"!

After a quick search, what are the benefits of infrared images? You claim x-ray vision, but I haven't seen anything like that.

The CCDs in webcams and digicams are sensitive to high wavelengths of infrared, as well as visible light. However, virtually all of them come with a filter to prevent the chip from picking them up - the most innocent reason for this being that it can just mess up the pictures. Replace the IR filter, though, with a visible light one (such as the negative film that thegecko used) and bingo - you've got an IR camera. Now some clothing materials are transparent to IR (only some, mind) and under the right conditions it's possible for cameras to faintly pick up the IR emissions of a human body.

Yeh its particularly difficult on this webcam but i just about managed it.

Right as im typing this i have a cannon a70 totally disassembled on my desk, im getting some unexsposed negative developed today to fill its ir filter slot that ive removed.

Im thinking of using this webcam mod in my chicken run to see what the lilbuggers get upto. or i might make a weatyher proof housing for it and buy a IR flood light. I have a big garden and theres alot of thiefs around here so be nice to see iof anyones messing about lol.

And you lot are all Pervs! lol

So with the IR camera, you can basically take pics in the dark?

I obviously don't know much about this.

Basically yes, you need a Infra red flood light or tourch that the human eye cannot see, but the modded camera can.

Theres also a combination of theatre gels that allows you to mod a par of sun glasses and see in the dark that way too.

Unfortunately that video/method isn't genuine, for the simple reason that the human eye isn't anywhere near sensitive enough to the wavelengths emitted from an IR LED to produce a complete visible image. The proof is easy enough: sit in a total pitch black and fire a TV remote (they use the same commercially available IR LEDs as used in the video) at your eyes.

DariushPetresku 09-07-2008 05:44 PM

i still dont have any pm in my box :/

Ervntewc 09-07-2008 06:10 PM

But what's so special about the picture he posted?
It's just negative, nothing else?

The IR light interacts with the theatre gels into a wave length we can see.
