Default ***Spoilers*** I am Legend "Are you real, Fred?" ***Spoilers***
Ok, so I just saw I am Legend for the second time (saw it once with my buddies, then the family wanted to see it today)..and I'm still not 100% on the whole "Fred" Situation.

Don't read on if you haven't seen the movie...

Both times I saw the movie, I clearly saw Fred's head move. Now, this is obviously a hallucination, but what about the rest of the scene?

Did the Alpha Male Dark Seeker set the trap, after seeing the Fresh Prince steal one of their women, and observing how the trap worked? Robert Neville noted that all normal human behavior was absent, but you could see that the Alpha Male was incredibly upset at the loss of the woman, to the point where he seems to cry.

In addition, when Will Smith comes to, the Alpha Male is waiting with dogs in hand for dusk.

...Or he could've been going completely nuts, imagined the entire thing, and fell into his own trap...

I also could very well be reading too deep into this movie..I'm not too sure if the writers intended this scene to be thought provoking or not.

What do you think?

fred's supposed to be in the video store right?

i think the bad guy rigged it.

it's probably just a plot device that signifies a turn in events.

I'm pretty sure it was a trap. He was just wrong about how all human emotions were absent I suppose. I also notice his head move but wasn't sure if I saw it right good to know it really did, lol.

I agree trap by dark seekers. The DS's definitely exhibited human nature. DId you see how pissed alpha male got when smith stole his woman? I think it was his personal woman. He almost jumped out into the sun to get her back.

his head moved. or least thats what they wanted us to believe that he saw.

my guess is that he set the trap in the hopes that a dark seeker would think it to be human, but in his state he forgot all about it and become trapped himself, and the dark seekers showed up due to the blood he dripped.........

You make a good point. Now that I think about it, I believe you to be right. I need to see it again.

I agree. You could have seen him set the trap earlier in the movie, when he throws the rope up to the bridge and makes a loop in the other end. ( I been a boy scout, I knew what he was doing lol )...

Its definitely a good movie and I think the way some of it was filmed was so that it was open to interpretation; either the dark seekers showing some behavioral intelligence or just the man character losing the plot due to the absence of human interaction for such a long period of time.

One thing confused me though in that scene, when he drops down after he cut himself loose did he fall on the knife or something else? Couldn't really see what it was what was sticking out his leg.

He fell on his knife, the blade broke off the handle in the process.

That's why I didn't recognize it sticking out off his leg, I heard it snap I think but I couldn't see it.

It was a trap by the "zombies" as they used normal rope, Neville used steel wire (didn't he?)

I think the trap was set by Neville. The smashed out window in front of it made it seem exactly like the setup he used earlier. I think the Dark Seekers moved Fred in front of it to make him freak out and forget about it, since that trap obviously never worked or was already forgotten about. When it sprung and he hit his head, the blood attracted them and they knew it had worked and were ready with the dogs.

Excellent film. I went to see it twice [thumbup]

Neville wasn't exactly in a state of hallucination or forgetfulness, though. I would say he was very sane and alert the whole time (the only time he showed mental instability is when the woman/child come later.)

I think it would be fair to say that Neville physically set up the trap, but the Seekers used Fred as bait (and in that sense, he did forget about setting the trap when he saw Fred.)

I kinda liked the movie, but would it matter if the "DS" showed some behavioral intelligence? I mean, in what way would that change the overall plot?

Because if they do, it defies the human perception of them (typical of us to under estimate our foes etc).

The DS's are obviously displaying intelligence, by the way the Alpha Male directs the attack on his house, and uses the dogs to attack him earlier in the film.

I think the trap was laid by them.

To me that was the most emotional scene in the entire movie. If you've ever had to put a pet down that you loved, it feels like murder. I recently had to do the same to my Husky/Shepherd mix of 16yrs. She was a constant companion, i talked to her as if she could understand everything even though she couldn't.

If taken in the context of the movie its every worse for Neville. Samantha was his only companion for so many years. His last gift by his daughter. It was hard to watch with dry eyes when he's sitting in tub after Samantha died.

Despite the flaky CG Dark Seekers it was a really good movie. It was well worth it on the IMAX too.
