I have the same problem right now. I came home for thanksgiving, and only my Mac is having problems. I have the same problem as you, my internet connection sucks. I'm wireless though, but no matter how close I am, it dosn't make a difference. I've never had the problem in Auburn, only when I'm back at my parents place. I go back tomorrow, so I don't really care, but it is kind of annoying.

And I'm assuming with the above statement, you tried CS at other places and it worked just fine? If so, what type of router do you have? Have you updated firmware on it? I used to have a router that, after about a month of being on, used to just slowly decrease speed until the connection just ran to a crawl. Also, can the other people in the house play CS just fine, or is it only you? I don't remember seeing you say whether or not that was the case. Now, I can tell you that when I gamed with my WiFi setup, my Linksys used to take a major **** on me and totally disconnect me. |

Just fine, I have the linksys wrt54g, they could play iirc. |
That's weird. What do the router settings look like?
And I don't remember you saying. . .did you try your computer on a different cable? By the way, to answer your question about whether a cable can just up and die. . .yes, they can. Could be the connection to the terminators at the end finally gave out. . .could be that one of the wires is barely tapped. Could be that near the end of the cable the wires finally gave out if it's a solid-core cable. Could be many things. :-\ As as example, at my old job, we had a user that could receive, but not send data. When we checked the wiring in the wall, 1 of the wires for the transmit pair was disconnected. . .it had worked for almost 6 months prior to that, no problem. And this was in a punched down jack, with a wire that shouldn't have been moving or being stressed at all. |

No I haven't, but I don't see how that would affect this problem. It's not like my internet doesn't work, it's just that I lag out completely in CS after 30 sec. - 30 min. and don't have internet ( can't send packets (or is it receive?)) for a couple minutes. Then everything works fine again.. I mean, if it could be the cable doing that, then by all means I'll try a different one. |
wait - you havent tried another cable yet?

It'll save a lot of headache, and bad cables can cause some of the most idiotic and retarded problems on the planet. |
Only my internet, not the whole house.
Why oh why.
So I thought that CS1.6 was causing this problem, but I was just proved wrong by my computer. It's just that I only really notice when playing CS since I play CS all the time.. So I'll be playing a game, or browsing the internet when suddenly out of no where my internet will just stop. My ping ( in CS ) will shoot up to 250-440 and I'll get disconnected, try to bring up the internet and get nothing. I'll wait a few minutes for it to start working again, and I'll start playing again and anywhere from 3 minutes to 30 minutes later my internet will cut out again. I checked the laptop, the downstairs computer, and my brothers computer and they will all have working internets. I just reformatted today to try to fix the problem. Complete reformat, and I switched my spot on the router with an empty spot and still no fix. Help? |
Buggered network cable? Buggered wireless adapter? May even be the router as well...maybe.
|
Yeah - that's a router issue.... firewall to be exact.
The firewall is blocking all traffic & released when the 'dodgy' packets stop getting sent/received.... but it's misreading packets as dodgy. I had this at my old place when I wasn't on my own router... now all is good :) |
If it was the network cable, why would I just be getting disconnected randomly? I don't think it's the router, because I've tried 3 different slots with the same result.

So could be dodgy router... just not a dodgy port on the router ;) |

and if was blocking packets temporarily, why would everyone else be able to use the internet but me when I get 'kicked off' ? I mean, it cuts me off randomly, even not when playing CS, and I'll go into my brothers room and his internet works. I could just be browsing futuremark and youtube, then nothing. |

If it was the cable, why would it happen so sporadically? and only for a couple minutes at a time?
Mice crimping and uncrimping the wire? =P But I'd rather it be the wire than the router.. NIC? |

I had same kind of problems myself and fixed it by trying a different NIC driver. (I'm using Vista Business) There are lots of issues with NIC drivers and VISTA... Try finding another driver for your NIC... |
