This is the best pic I have of me at the party. The orange line is a long straw sipping on a jello-shot. It didn't work very well.
The mask came on and off all night. I also won some costume contest or something, but I had to go... down the road, when the prizes were given out.

Making a mask for Halloween! Need some help!!
 

Ok, I've wanted to do this for about 3 years and I think I'm really doing it this time.

I'm here at home trying to decide how to do this now. I've decided on paper mache or plaster, but I don't know where to go from there. (deja vu all the sudden)

Anyways, I go to a Halloween party every year and so I need a mask that will still allow me to drink while wearing it.

I've decided on a Bauta Venetian mask. Like this one, but I'll paint it differently.

Well, the problem is, how do I start? I've found several "how to make a mask" websites, but I need "how to make a BAUTA mask" website.

Anyone have any suggestions? I thought about just buying one, but they range from $50 to hundreds of dollars. Also, I have a big head so if I bought one, it likely wouldn't fit how I'm imagining.

I am thinking about making something CRAZY for next year. Now that I am familiar with the process, making some amazing stuff shouldn't be too hard.

Ok... so here's what I have so far. I purchased some plaster bandages and Vaseline. I smeared the Vaseline on my eyebrows and hairline and then began layering the plaster bandages.

I think when I removed the mask, it cleared my skin of any blackheads and peach fuzz. I would be terrified to think of trying to remove it without the spearing of a thin layer of petroleum jelly on my face and hair.

Ohh... does anyone know of an effective way of removing Vaseline from your hair? I've washed and washed and scrubbed and everything and my hair is kinda.... well, lets say I can style it anyway I can imagine at the moment.

My plan is to use celluclay to mold the menacing eyebrows and nostrils. I wondered if anyone would mention that. I still have lots of work to do but I'll keep this thread updated.

You should check out SomethingAwful.com, every year they have some members that make totally amazing masks, I mean Hollywood quality masks that they start like four months in advance. I'm sure there are a few massive threads about them now though.

Yeah... originally I thought I would be able to fit a glass under there, but it does not look like it now. I'm going to have to use a straw. I'm sure the mask will be on and off all night... I just want to keep it on most of the time.

New nose and brow.

If you can't tell in the picture, the celuclay is still wet. I think it dries white... but maybe it dries gray. Either way, it will be painted in the end.

I've trimmed the top (forehead) part so it is much shorter than the previous pic. It fits right at my hairline, so that's cool. I still need to trim the bottom, but I'll do that later.

Also, since the mask is formed to my face, I had to add real nostrils so I could breath when wearing the mask.

This is where I'm at so far. Don't flame me too much. I've never even attempted something like this before so I am quite happy with the results so far.

nice thread and fun to see the results. But one question ... from the example page you gave ... you will cut it right? because Its a little large (the mask) [rofl]

It does still need some trimming up so don't worry, it won't be that big. Also, I have some exciting ideas for paint, but I am still trying to finalize that idea.

When looking at the mask last night, I realized it needed some cheeks.

[edit] I just noticed that the differences in the cheeks are not as noticeable in the pics.


Ok, not much has changed, so I decided to add this pic to this post. Below, I have trimmed the bottom of the mask so it is not as tall and I have also sanded down the entire piece. There is still some texture to it, but I think it's going to work. I feel it adds more detail than if it was glass-like smooth.

Well, so far what you can see in the pics is one box that cost about $11.00.

I can't find this same box online, but the box is called Quick-Sculpting Kit made by Activa and contains:

2 rolls of Rigid Wrap - Plaster coated bandages
1 package Celluclay - paper mache clay-like stuff

At the moment, I'm doing some paint testing on some of the dried plaster bandages that was discarded after a different idea didn't work. I'm trying to get as much done as possible before the weekend is over.

Lemme know how the smoothing/painting process goes. I was considering making a mold of my face and then filling it in with friendly plastic and wonderflex and doing a plastic mask so that it would be less fragile. I'd be worried about plaster breaking.

I'm in the process of trying to design a mask... but I want something that isn't fragile. So far the best I can come up with is a plaster mold of my face and then use wonderflex for the actual mask and the plaster would just be used to help shape the wonderflex.
