Default Why hasn’t anyone brought back giant 10 foot centipedes or anything?
Ok, so I’m watching something on the Discovery channel right now about the evolution of Earth or some jazz and they just went over a period of “giant insects” and stuff. Obviously this was from higher levels of oxygen and different temperatures and a whole bunch of other stuff and THEN still over many many many generations but, with something which has a lifespan of just a few days you could model many generations without yourself dying off.

So then, why on Earth hasn’t anyone tried to recreate the conditions that were believed to exist around the period that giant insects occupied the Earth? Not that I want a 10 foot centipede or anything but seriously, how god damn cool would that be?

Because humans most likely would have an extremely hard time to live and breathe in the conditions?
Imagine year-round +50 ºC weathers in extreme humidity.

he is talking about a controlled environment, not terraforming. human don't live in Zoos and such control environment. eg. we have penguin in icerooms but the Zoo walkway is still 30C+ not even airconed, wtf.

Oh ya, tell me about it, I would just die instantly.

But ya, like control temperature, slow increase oxygen with each generation, hell, even selectively kill off weak or physically small offspring each generation.

I’m wanting someone that knows more then me come in and tell me why this would never work because otherwise I seriously want to do this. Could you picture like a 2 foot big dragon fly or a freaking 10 foot centipede? We can clone stuff and mess with genes and everything else why the HELL hasn’t someone working in genetics or something done this as a pet project at home?!

Playing god and all of that other jazz is a big reason as to why there are not public announcments of this type of stuff. I'm sure it's going on somewhere in the world. Which will be great when they break out and my house becomes infested by mutant termites that are larger then my cat [surrender]

Awesome, I seriously think I might start reading up on this and packing a little money away to make this a hobby. I’ll be sure to break it to the news once I have any results; everything was unconventional and questionable when it was in early research and laboratory tests.

i don't think it will work unless you have 50 million years to wait for the worms to devolute. [rolleyes]

theres still colossal squids in the antartic deep beneath the ice and other huge sea creatures.
someone caught a 990lb squid recently :O

But the aptly named colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is thought to be the largest of all - possibly reaching up to 14m (46ft) long.

I like it. After they had been bred you could attach mechanical oxygen pumps to keep them going in normal atmospheric conditions and ride them!

I dont believe this ****...

evolution took millions of years, you think we can recreate something from so many years ago in a lifetime? just by "recreating" the enviroment... no!

Some form of genetic engineering would be needed, thats if you even knew the species' dna that your trying to recreate.

my god i wonder sometimes if our race is experiancing devolution.

there is what advancement in medical sciences (people with poor gene survive) and incent (err...) will do that a species.

i want a sandworm! [thumbup] wonder how much their road tax gonna be how how mileage i can get out a single human being!

(ya, thinking about DUNE2... i miss westwood...)

as akinkhoo said: selectively kill off weak or physically small offspring each generation, is much more efficient than "natural selection".

Do you think it took millions of years to get pigs with more bacon or cows with bigger tits...no!

theres this special sort of adult salamanda thats been suspended in its lavae/tadpole form for millions of years and quite by mistake when they were pets for some people they metamorphosed into its adult form they descovered that if they survived (not all survived the process btw) they lived shorter lives than in its juvinile form.

do you know what caused it ?

wrong tank temperatures and change in tank water levels and this happens in a time scale of months not millenia

so what is that ? evolution because they chose not to evolve in thier natural habitat but in captivity they metamorphosed even though the majority died with in months because of the stress of the change.

but a few survived = survival of the strongest/fittest = sped up evolution possibly ?
