Default BBC TV Licence Cost To Rise By 3% (UK)
News article here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6273347.stm

Do you think people should have the option to drop BBC channels to save them this money? I mean alot pay £30+ for Sky yet never watch BBC and have to pay the licence fee, would you like to delete BBC from your Sky Viewer or terrestrial TV in order to save money and only watch Ch3, 4 & 5? (Which have adverts and therefore no cost).

I happily pay a licence fee as I think the BBC provides a good service, however, the fee is going up but I can't help but feel the quality is going down. I lose track of the BBC TV channels there are now, but do we really need all of them? Not to mention the numerous radio stations that cater for every genre and sub-genre out there, I still hope that we don't get as low as BBC Grime.

I wouldn't mind if BBC started to broadcast shows over the internet, that for me would provide value for money. We started to get live World Cup matches, and Wimbledon, last year over their website which was a good step forward, but the quality needs to be improved. I don't expect HD transmission over the net, but with the bandwidth available we can at least get 640x480 broadcasts.

Hell no I like watching stuff on BBC3/BBC4 I watch Newsnight most nights on BBC2 that's the sort of stuff that wouldn't get produced if weren't for the license fee. And personally I think 3% not bad at all it's directly in line with inflation, now if you want me to get started on the 7%+ increase on my train fare for a service that is poorer than it was last year I'd be happy to moan.

if the BBC ran a tighter ship there'd be no need for these increases.

As long as Doctor Who and the 2 spin off series keep running I will be happy to keep paying. More Red Dwarf would be good to.

I had a letter sent to me to go to some court on the 11th, damn I forgot all about it. This guy came over the house I was staying at visiting and he said I need to pay some fee lol. Of course I ignored it as I never heard of tourists having to pay it, like in a hotel etc

Are you guys trying to suggest the BBC is not subject to the same inflationary market forces as every other business and individual? I guess next time you go to your boss for a pay rise because prices are going up you'll be okay about it when he replies "well if you ran a tighter ship! How's about a few energy saving bulbs and a smaller car?"

Most of what the BBC produces is utter drivel. And I really resent paying for all those awful radio stations they run.

Theres only 3 things I watch on BBC:

Top Gear
Red Dward (when its on)
Eastenders

Eastenders is the funniest show on TV, its meant to portray real life etc but its so unrealistic, everyone has slept with everyone and are all interbred. [rofl]

I'm not denying the state of the institution know as BBC what I'm questioning is the idea that an inflationary increase in the license fee is unrealistic. If you have a problem with that I suggest you aim your critisims towards people like Gordon Brown and Mervyn King who seem to be incapable of keeping a lid on the economy.

Eh? If the BBC ran a "tighter ship" (man that's a cliche I'm getting sick of) then there would be no need for any increase. At its root his has little to do with inflationary pressures. As the shleps who will be forced to pay it (and as one with knowledge of how it works) we're perfectly entitled to complain and chafe at any increase, no matter how slight. Particularily when money is constantly being pissed up the wall.

It's basically a choice between adverts or the licence fee. In this day and age I think everyone's used to adverts, and sometime it's handy when watching a film or program to know there'll be an ad break coming up so you can put the kettle on or nip to the loo. Not crazy American-like 3 ad breaks in a 20 minute show, mind. One in a half hour show is ok.

I thought everyone just pressed the pause button when it was convenient . Then resume when they came back that also lets you fast forward the adverts if you do it before adverts. Got to love sky plus box’s and the like. Its about time that was a standard built into all TV's.

How many channels do the uk get on terrestrial tv?

In ireland we get RTE 1, RTE 2, TV Three and T na G (which is an irish channel)

Basically we get 3 crappy channels considering T na G is broadcast in irish (who the hell speaks irish anymore, yet we still have to learn it in school and pass it in order to get into any college)

Anyway a TV license here is €158 / £105 and there is never anything on. Im glad i have Sky or i would go absolutely crazy.

Five (if you're lucky): BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 (only in some areas though).

EDIT: That's analogue though, on digital there's a lot more.

I think those with Sky should have the option to drop BBC channels, and remove their standard aerial so they only pay the Sky subscription and save £100+ a year.
