This 3 hour delay is very advantageous for me. I slept in by accident.

Physics Brain Teaser for you folks:

Where does the energy for his ascent come from?

That sucks. They were just saying that they can't use the balloon again. Once it's unpacked and filled, that's it. Can't be re-used. I wonder how much it cost for them to abort.

Apart from Helium being lighter than air you mean?

Where is the net energy loss there? Felix will start at the ground, go high in the skies and return back to the earth faster than the speed of sound.

Helium being less dense than air does not explain the fact that Felix can move 120k feet against a gravitational field. Do you think the balloon would float on the moon?

Look at it this way, if you throw an apple into the sky, the energy is put into the apple by your arm, which is fueled by your breakfast. Where is the fuel here?

The energy comes from the act of pumping/compressing the helium into the tanks.

No, because the pressure would probably burst it, the atmosphere is next to nonexistent, and the gravity is much lower.

It's mainly gravity's effect on the air causes the less dense material to rise, that's the 'fuel'

Yeah, pretty much. The existence of Helium in a gaseous form at sea level has potential energy stored in atmospheric pressure.

What if I don't eat breakfast?
Perpetual Motion!

Sure, but gravity can not be both the fuel on the way up and on the way down.

On the ascent it does, until the buoyancy of the balloon matches the slowing potential energy as it rises (and hitting it's maximum atmospheric pressure expansion capabilities)

Vacuum inside the balloon would create even more lift than helium because it is lighter (no mass?), but then there is no pressure inside the balloon to support the balloon structure against air pressure and the balloon would crush. It would require stronger and heavier balloon material to keep the vacuum and then air pressure wouldn't be high enough against the balloon to win the gravity force.

I don't exactly understand why air pressure focus to create force the way that the balloon raise (opposite direction from the gravity) and not just float more or less randomly in the air even without wind? Does gravity force gas to behave that way when gas pressure suddenly increases?
