I had been checking out Apple Maps for a couple months now and was always left unimpressed. There is no doubt that it will take quite some time for them to get better.

Fortunately there are numerous alternatives that can be had on the App Store for the interim but it is undoubtedly unfortunate that the stock maps are basically a joke unless you live in one of the well covered areas.

You can still use Google Maps on iOS, through a browser. No Street View though.

Unfortunately that is hardly a good option since you can't set Google maps or other alternatives as the default maps app.

I'm also hearing rumours that either Apple is stalling the Google Maps app or it's not really waiting approval at all.

If I was Google, I'd let Apple bury themselves over this one for a while. Let every iPhone 5 user suffer with it for a few months, and it'll take some of the shine off that lovely new toy!

That would be rather silly move. As it could lead to the iPhone having Bing maps as an alternative (like you can use Bing Search instead of Google). Since Google doesn't make money on Android, but the services it provides and not being available on 30% of the world's smartphones would be a big loss.

I go back and fourth between google and bing maps. Sometimes one is better than the other. The bing maps app is fantastic though. Just saved my ass from being stuck on the expressway.

Nah, Google don't care. What they want is for Google Maps to be approved so that they can get all those Maps users back asap.
