Holy taint ****. I just pre-ordered a 64GB iPhone 5 and it was about $850. My anus is quite sore at the moment.
I would never buy any phone for that price... even if it had a battery that could run for 2 weeks straight, i3 cpu, and some mid range desktop video card in it while maintaining a weight and thin profile like a razer.... I mean holy **** theres so much that can be done with 850 dollars...
Thats ****in one month of condo fee for me...
I could go to Atlantic city and stay there for 2 days at the Borgata casino, see bill maher live, eat at the best steakhouse and seafood place each night, and have 500 bucks left for gambling... (i get free rooms :P)

A lot of money to one person is nothing to another. There will always be someone with more money than you who thinks that an extravagance to you is an impulse purchase to them.

£699 (or $1135) is rather a lot but I don't think spending so much is necessarily much of an issue with something like the iPhones, because they hold value well. So if you're willing to sell up in a year or two, it's not so bad. What I do find a bit grueling is the price hikes for more GB's. Paying £70 for an extra 16GB is a bit extortionate.

I think I must be getting old or something. I am using a galaxy nexus and really can't see the point in spending more on an upgrade.

I had the galaxy s3 for a week or so and sent it back for a refund, it was £499 and really was not worth selling my nexus and "upgrading" to the s3. I also tried the HTC One X (£300) and sent that back for a refund also.

Now I am back on my Galaxy Nexus, stock 4.1.1 jelly bean and I am looking forward to my contract running out in December so I can switch over to a sim only deal.

I don't need a new phone!

The only phone that seems interesting to me is the LG Optimus G, will I get it? Probably not!

I still think the Android ecosystem has a long way to go to make the experience as accessible as iOS.
And I don't think that Google ever wants to take Android there. It would have a long time ago if it wanted to be as easy and basic to use as iOS.

It is a different OS. It is what it is and it is a great OS. I think that Windows Phone 8 will be a great medium between the two. I am excited to try it myself. See how it is. Lacks apps, but so long as it gets a dozen or so that I use somewhat often, I could care less if it only had those 12 apps. lol Still wish WebOS was still around though.

Ordered 2 32GB iPhones at 2:55 this morning. I was expecting server crashes and lots of refreshing, but didn't get that at all. Just went to Verizon's website and went through the order process, took about 10 mins. At 3:30 the Apple store still wasn't up and AT&T was being hammered. My pre-order experiences with AT&T always took at least an hour to get through.

Having recently accepted a new job offer I've come to realize that truth. Also, dating a poor girl has helped me realize it as well. I'm like "but I always buy tide and clorox" and she's buying dollar brand stuff. To her me buying brand name detergent for 4x the price is just plain stupid. And I'll have to admit my clothes don't come out cleaner or anything, and I own a new'ish Kenmore steam washer steam dryer set and she uses 20 year old crap that came with her apartment.

I've always made the "omg what a waste of money argument" but I'll admit that it's all based on your personal situation. To me buying Apple products was silly because I don't see much extra value, not for the crazy price, but then to the guy making $80k/yr the price to him is nothing and it's worth it for the extra cash.

That said I still won't buy Apple products because I think they're the devil. If they stopped trying to be a bully and just focused on producing a top notch product I'd respect them. Right now they're that snobby rich kid who beats you up for your lunch money just because they're a douche.

Technically you are correct, both are cellphones but there is a fundamental difference.

A smartphone uses a mobile operating system and a cellphone doesn't. There are other differences as well, but that's the really big one.
They're all cell/mobile phones.

Technically all modern phones have some sort of OS, even if it's just to run an address book and manage text messages etc.

A 'smart' phone is supposed to include mail, browsing and media, but more specifically 3rd party applications, as well as phone functions.

One thing to note on the iPhone5. It is basically a 16:9 resolution. All the apps created for any iPad/iPhone are 4:3 so scale very nicely. So until devs update their apps, you will get black bars on top and bottom of screen, as if you are on the old 3.5" screen.

Who knows how long it will take for all 700,000 apps to get updated and be maintained in both resolutions.

Then this just adds to the complexity of app making and maintaining. Will hurt whatever app advantage iPhone has left.

There is still a significant app advantage on iOS. On top of that, yes, there will be two aspect ratios but the myriad of different resolutions on Android far outnumber iOS.

Right, because developing for 2 aspect ratios (something all PC games and console games already do just fine) is almost as complex as developing for 650 devices and 17 versions of an operating system and christ knows how many resolutions (so about 90,000 possible configurations). 2... 90,000... 2... 90,000. Almost exactly the same; like piss and fine wine.

Its not about how rich he is... Also I did state in the start of my post "I"...
I've wasted money on **** that many dont think is worth spending on, heck even I admit most of it was pointless.
And I like how you have to go "There will always be someone with more money than you". How do you know how much I make?
I simply stated that "I" do not see the value in such a purchase. Just like how many people think my investment into the remote control hobby was a waste to them.

If it makes him happy thats fine... I've been there and spent 600 on phones before like an n900. I have come to the conclusion as long as I get no dropped calls, good internet browsing experience, and spotify... I'm happy. I used to demand more but now I've been there and done that... I dont demand as much from a smartphone like I used to.

The word "you" was used to indicate whoever was reading, not literally you. Time for you to join Kyros in the nutter box?

Why can you never, ever, accept that you are wrong and I am right. I don't even know why you're arguing about this since the correct answer should be obvious to even an ameba.

Cell phone: a phone that use a cell network

Mobile phone: a phone that one can use while on the move

A smartphone fits into both categories.

Maybe if you won't take my word for it, perhaps you will of the OED:

smartphone n. any of various telephones enhanced with computer technology; (now) spec. a type of mobile phone which incorporates the functions of a palmtop computer, personal digital assistant, or similar device.

This is probably a dumb question but can the iPhone 5 do 4G?
