"Perhaps a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility." These are the words of Dr. Harold "Sonny" White, the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate. Dr. White and his colleagues don't just believe a real life warp drive is theoretically possible; they've already started the work to create one. Basically, you create a football(american) shaped craft within a doughnut shaped ring that itself is emitting a field that encompasses them both. You then force space time in front of the craft to contract while expanding space time behind the vehicle. Thus you move through time (up to 10 times faster than speed of light) while not feeling as though you are moving at all, because you technically are not moving within time. By changing the shape of the ring, they were able to dramatically lower the power requirements previously estimated as necessary which was the equivalent of the entire energy output of the planet Jupiter. Now, they estimate a craft the size of the voyager satellites would be able to produce the energy required. |
