Dude, there is really is no 'opinion' about it. America rose to prominence during the modern era, most countries have 1 city that is modern... the US has 50. That is the advantage of having no past. No hand wringing about tearing stuff down to build new stuff.

It's still an opinion because it's all down to taste, although I agree with everythign else you said. Some people may think their taste is superior to others though. Other's may think the Bilbao Museum in Spain is more their thing. (which may actually have been designed by a Canadian)

After WW2 America's economy enabled massive building projects, and European architects emigrated to the US en masse: Mies Van Der Rohe, Gropius, and Breuer worked along side Frank Lloyd Wright, Saarinen, SOM and Louis Kahn to define modern post-war architecture. Even architects who didn't emigrate had difficulty realizing their projects in Europe for the very reasons zeddoo stated, and their ideas were fully absorbed by architects in the US. There are more first-rate modernist buildings in the US alone than all of Europe combined.

What you have just described is the invention of the best construction methods, just one part of great architecture. Personally, I consider aesthetics to be a far more important part in deciding what makes great architecture, but that's just my opinion (and no, I'm not really interested in yours).

This may be because the US is about the size of Europe. Like Acupuncture said, it's almost like a group of countries. And also because almost all American architecture is modern. It was imagined within the lifetime of people still alive today. Still, I suppose the architecture over the last 80 years is generally a lot better than most of the shite over here.

It's all very well being as sarcastic as possible, but my only thoughts on architecture and art are that it is far too subjective to define "the best". Seriously, what criteria could you use? Even if you narrow it down to a single category it's still a complete minefield. If you said that America has lead technical development in modern architecture I doubt anyone would argue, although the far east is starting to overtake in my opinion.

I wouldn't say that the US is culturally sterile, there is a lot to like. It's all quite compacted together compared to Europe though where you can easily pick out different styles across the centuries.
