Its all down to c**p organisation Mike in my opinion. They should have made it easier for English people to buy more tickets in the first place plus a certain amout of freebies to people who deserved them.

Here in our part of the US, NBC has blocked the broadcasting of the Olympics on the public air waves, so unless one has a cable tv connection and pays an additional fee to the cable company, it's not viewable. Wasn't like that 4 years ago.

We dropped cable tv years ago ... too blinkety blank expensive. Basically all we watch on the open air waves are the British comedies, the rest is streaming off the internet.

Heard about the WSJ site doing some sort of streaming broadcast and will attempt to connect with that through my Netflix account.

The Public Television here is broadcasting most of the Olympic events (and live, too). It's availble practically to anyone who has a TV set and an aerial. Of course, you are obliged to pay a monthly fee, but lots of people don't and watch the channels anyway.

We have satellite TV with a package which has all the public channels in it, so we can follow the Games easily. Plus, we have Eurosport which also has a very decent coverage of all the events.

When I say free Colin I mean for people like the badly injured service men who have come back from the war, not politicians or other scroungers.

I, who don't really go in a big way for the Olympics--usually, at any rate--have found myself quite interested in both the mens' soccer and archery matches {females too, for the latter}. I love the way the camera captures the trajectory of the arrow as it makes its way--often thru the raindrops--to that target, especially when it notches in the 10 ring. I only wish I could have shot so consistently when I was in law-enforcement {to qualify, that is, once a year at an Army range in upstate New York}. As I got older, I noticed that my scores kept going down, no matter how hard and often I practiced at my private indoor range. One of the deciding factors in knowing it was time for me to "hang 'em up" and leave it to the younger people. One of the officers I worked--and occasionally shot with--was very much into archery, and had travelled all around the world to participate in tournaments. After watching this event--really for the first time--in these Olympics, I now understand why he is so enthusiatic about this wonderful skill and sport.

Steve, your shooting sounds like my golf I now have a handicap that is down right embarrassing when I get on the tee and am asked what I am playing off I have to make sure I whisper the reply.

I have given up clay shooting. Having lost the sight in my left eye, and having shot off my left shoulder since I was nine years old, I am not going to pick up any more trophies shooting off my right. Archery is a fascinating sport and so quintessentially English. I have been told that the old English law stating that every man of a certain age must practise every week, was never repealed.

Well it is all over, and in my opinion the athletes did a lot better than the organisers. A lot of Londons restaurants and retailers have suffered financially as people avoided London in case of massive holdups, of which they had been warned. A few years back the Pope visited Canterbury. I set off to work withe a sense of dread, wondering if I would even get there. The radio was giving dire warnings of gridlocks and telling people not to even attempt entering Canterbury unless it was urgent. I have never had such a quiet and easy journey on a working day. There were sightseers and pilgrims, but nothing like the expected crowds. At the end of the day I helped move mountains of food from Marks and Spencer up to the hospital. Special orders for the day, which did not get sold. And so the cry is still heard. " The sky is falling in......................"

I saw (and heard) the Women's Final in Table Tennis. As I listened to the commentary, I thought "I forgot more about Table Tennis than these guys ever knew!"
[It takes some pretty close following of my internet persona to recall that I used to be an avid tournament-competitor in Table Tennis. About half-a-dozen years ago, I was in the US top-20 for number of sanctioned-matches played.]
I later discovered that one of the commentators was a former American champion. [Kind of like the best hockey-player in Mexico, I know...] But still, he should have had a better handle on the commentary. I supposed that it was like the archetypal foreign-exchange grad-assistant Maths hot-shot. Just because they can DO it doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be any good at EXPLAINING it. In fact, without realizing it, they can sound downright ignorant sometimes.
