She just emailed me after I told that one interview was completely unreadable. We will have our meeting on Monday morning. Then I suspect I will be arrested for stealing state secrets or something.

Those weren't directly from the interviews. They are paraphrasing for examples of the stupidity. Sadly, the actual interviews are far worse.

As for explaining it to her, even if she understands the issue, it becomes "loss of face." She is very proud (I have no idea why) and doesn't handle criticism well.

I don't want her involved. I'm hoping that she will be too busy now to be involved and I can do the work in peace. But I will definitely try that approach. I will have to be adamant about redoing the interviews myself, however. Plus, it looks better on my internship evaluation.

Yes, but not fluent enough to conduct the interviews on my own. Even if I was fluent, they wouldn't let me. Ideally, I will just take a translator with me and will have him/her translate as I conduct the interview. The bigger issue than the bad translation here is the atrociously poor interviewing skills of my research team. It seems that they were only interested in confirming what they already knew and missed a lot of opportunities for further insight.

Sorry, all of this falls on the project manager.
The questionaire should have been tested prior.
Interviewer training seems to have been non exisitent.
A few trial interviews with reviews of the translations should have highlighted most of the problems.
Crappy execution. Blaming others for your shortcomings seems unfair. Granted it does look like you weren't given much to work with, but a good project manager would have realized that prior (which you seem to have) and made accomodations for it. (which you didn't) I will agree that doing it in a secondary language make is tougher but that shouldn't be an excuse.

I agree with Rah. Why are you even using interviewers? Just work up a written or online questionaire. That way you get exactly the same questions each time. To my knowledge, that is these accepted way of collecting this kinds of data.

Rah, clearly didn't understand the situation and made some foolish remarks regardless. In the end, I'm not in charge of this project. When it's done, I go back to school, fill out the report, tell them what I learned and move on. If the project fails, I'll just have to write my thesis on something else. Meanwhile, their school will never get a student from mine again. Despite all that, I am doing everything that is possible to prevent this project from failing, even if it means that I have to do everything myself. The problem is getting approval from the PhD, who is in charge of it.
