So what you're saying is the only means by which you could have a livelihood (if you can call it that) without identification is through illegal work or the good graces of friends, neighbors, and relatives. legal employment cashing a check opening a back account receiving social welfare benefits Yeah. I'd say you're right. And instead of focusing on why people don't have ID's and getting them this necessary instrument (maybe by supporting this voter ID law that subsidizes ID's), Democrats want to say wah! people don't have ID's so they're being disenfranchised. My brain is struggling to comprehend the Democratic position and I just can't. On facebook, I get called racist. |

You need a photo ID for... |

You usually need your driver's license and social security number to fill out all the required forms. Some require you to fill out a proof of residency which requires a birth certificate or passport in addition to driver's license. Two quick questions, firstly what photo ID is required for legal employment? Also, do photo ID's not have a validity dates on them? Things like opening bank accounts are things many people only do once. Many people wouldn't have opened a new account for decades and probably wouldn't have needed a photo ID back when they did. A state ID in PA is $13.50 and is surprisingly quick at the DMV to renew. They require no documentation to renew (assuming you have the expired ID). If you renew online, you simply walk in and they hand you the new ID or take a new picture within minutes, with no wait necessary. The voter ID law in PA provides voter ID's for free. |

Have you ever filled out an I-9? Some companies let you do this at home and thus you never present your ID, but the practice is totally illegal. If I did, it would have been long ago (and most periods of employment in the US were with universities which might have different rules...). JM |

Voter registration cards are valid for I-9s in place of photo ID. Go figure. You still need an ID to function in society, and anybody who doesn't have one should really do themselves a favor and go get one. If the state is handing them out free (which they must do for these laws to be legal), then that's even better.
