That had to hurt. Yeah, it didn't help when Karl Rove was pushing Coons. The entire republican establishment brought out the knives after she upset Castle. They would have rather seen her lose to the democrat than actually win. She did much better than any other Republican since Roth in DE - so she's not that bad a politician really.

I do believe Palin proved a polarizing force in 08.
I would suggest that she definitely motivated a number of voters on both sides.

That made so many voters choose to vote for the other side? No, probably not.

If McCain had Lieberman, I would have considered him. It was actually Palin which was the final nail on the coffin (I liked McCain for a Republican, still was unlikely to vote for him because of Republicans the last 12 years).
