Default House of Lords reform dropped
What is the point of an elected House of Lords? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

Just get rid of it already.

Do I detect an air of disgruntlement among the party ranks?

If you're going to start electing it you might as well rename it a "senate"...
Then they'd have to make it so Northern Ireland, Wales, England and Scotland each got 2 senators or something...or it would just be a redundant second chamber in the legislature.

The devolution of power really was retarded. Sure, give them some small local representative body but also give England some small local representative body as well and then have a national Parliament with clearly defined powers so that when the inevitable conflict arises there is a legal way to resolve the dispute. The current mess is like they got half way to a federalist system then decided "Ahh, **** it. It's too much effort."

bend over to the Tories; suck up to the Tories; looks totally naive and basically looks like a colossal ****! This administration has done everything the Lib Dems wanted. It's clear the Conservatives have no future.

This administration has done everything the Lib Dems wanted.
And that's why the LibDem's long-standing pledge to abolish university tuition fees, which was a cornerstone of their campaigning for nearly a decade, was finally passed.

Wait, their campaign pledge was to eliminate college tuition? Why on earth is that a good idea?

The House of Lords can't even do anything, anyway, right?
They have an important purpose as a revising chamber and constitutional safeguard.

This administration has done everything the Lib Dems wanted. It's clear the Conservatives have no future.

That is definitely what would happen, because that has happened every other time.

Wait, no it hasn't.

Until a decade or so ago anyone could go to university in the UK (with the right grades ofc) and they didn't have to pay for tuition, they were also given a grant to pay for accomodation/food/books etc if their parents didn't earn that much. Then came student loans, then the grants disappeared, and then came tuition fees.

How exactly students leaving university in debt is a good thing for poor people, I have no idea. Are you sure you've thought this through?
there were considerably fewer students back then.

http://www.ucas.ac.uk/about_us/media...es/2010/210110

In 1999 there were 334,594 accepted applicants. Ten years later in 2009 there were 481,854 - an increase of 44% (see table 5). This represents an increase of 25,227 (5.5%) on entry for 2008. There was an overall increase in the number of applicants of 8.7%. Applicants aged 20 and under showed a 6.9% increase.

Students are poor.
Graduates, however, are rich. Unless they study useless crap like Philosophy.
