Now you see, I thought this thread was going to be about this:
Not the guy that punched the woman was a member of their Nazi party, a party that has 21 seats in the Greek parliament.

Europe is so open about its racism, it is amazing.

I like how Al persists in regarding Europe as some sort of monolithic entity even as it disintegrates.

To Elok:

That is a very extreme view you have there. I see no signs of disintegration. Probably some countries will be kicked out of the EURO zone but politically the EC doesn't seem to change all that much. (just an observation, not my personal opinion on whether it should break down and dissolve or not in its current shape and form).

I'm glad there's no racism in Philly.
Sure there is racism, but there is nothing in the US on par with the stuff in that video. It is just shocking that whenever something small happens in this country it becomes international news, but when **** in that video goes on all the time in Europe no one hears about it.

If we didn't have a two party system we would have some representatives with some very ugly views. Especially if we had over 20% unemployment.

Our multi-party system has wing-nuts who also are forced to fly under the radar.

It's because the electorate will punish wing-nuts who are too blatant or extreme.

I think it's the electorate, not the system necessarily. We get what we deserve politically.

In America, Trent Lott gets destroyed for suggesting he would have voted for a pro-segregation candidate in 1948, while toasting said candidate at his 100th birthday party.

In Europe,

And not a single **** is given.

So your point is that people in Europe are free to dissent from the mainstream and hold views that disgust most people?
The point is that those views seem uncomfortably close to the mainstream.

I have never heard of this happening. I have not heard of shootouts over sports games here. It's certainly not a regular occurrence or a subculture.

Guns, on the other hand, are a culture here, and that is awesome.
Yup, you must be an american since you couldn't figure out what I meant. I said european nutcases act stupid when watching football games - american nutcases buys guns and act stupid generally.

Yes, in Europe we have this thing we call free speech and tolerance for different of opinions, as long as you do not start shooting anyone in the street noone pays much attention (knifing is OK), we really only care about food, football, women and unemployment benefits.

They pay so little attention to it that they passed laws against it.

The one about Poland and Ukraine that prompted Alby to make generalizations about a whole continent and allege that no one in Europe was paying attention to a subject that the BBC did a report on?

Yes, it shows that they aren't good about properly shaming people who believe repugnant things.
Funny. The image of the US is pretty much the same: a bunch of idiots who love freedom so much they deny their fellow men the right of free choice.

How ironic - accusing an entire continent of people of being racist/tolerant of racism.

See this is exactly the problem. The US puts everything out in the open and we challenge each other. The only reason you know about Trayvon Martin is because it became an international news story and a huge story.
I'm sorry, Ozzy, but if you think things like the Martin incident are rare, and that we keep things in the open in this country, you are deluding yourself. The rest of your post is on much more solid ground.

But look on the bright side: we're all equally douchebaggy!
