They say they want to outlaw abortion, continue the war on drugs, bomb Iran and they love torture. But at least the government will have a smaller budget, giving less to the poor while it continues its reign of terror.

yeah, but those are all things are big govt policies
most of the base likes those and only ron paul wingnuts are ideologically consistent on such issues
i'd say a majority of republican electorate is surprisingly pragmatic
they just don't want to feel guilty about straying from their principles
so they just pretend like they aren't
