Also one I won't die in if I crash during a race. Thanks.

May I suggest a reconditioned '99 Pontiac Grand AM SE coupe. You should be able to find one rebuilt to spec for under $20,000. You can comfortably cruise around 120 kph, but can do significantly better. Make sure you have wide tires; since the car is built close to the ground, this will negate the chances of rolling over at high speeds.99_pontiac_grandam_se_coupe.jpg

I do not in any way condone the illegal art of street racing.

Fisker Karma or like

Edit: not because it's green - just because it'll kick your arse.

I'm feeling suddenly nostalgic for the days when you only wanted us to help you protect yourself from reckless teenage sex. If an activity involves multiple cars moving at high speeds in close proximity, it's not really capable of being safe.

I think you should get a car that has an engine. With four wheels. And a steering wheel.
So that's five wheels then?

Dad recently got one of those. The hybrid isn't worth the price difference even with tax breaks, though.

That's part of the point. She's obviously getting a car for graduation, so she can be a bit profligate. It's Daddy's money.

I've heard both very good and very bad things about Subaru. From people I know who have them, you either get a vehicle that never has problems or a vehicle with nothing but problems.

FWIW, I would caution against Mazda. At least until they officially don't use any Ford parts. My '04 Mazda 3 is becoming quite expensive, as all of the Ford parts keep dying with alarming (and expensive) regularity.

Then it comes down to what kind of racing you want it to be best at. Quarter mile? Drifting? Rally? NASCAR? They all have cars that fit them.
The track I went to last weekend was two miles. I rode in some sweet cars! There were three lotuses there.

They're not in close proximity. They space them out. And you're only allowed to pass on the straightaways with a point.

Citroen DS3?
that looks silly.

I ended up with a Mazda 6 due to cash considerations, but here's what I really wanted.
The Hyundai Sonata kicks ass, and you can get the hybrid for under $30k.

something about him not thinking I'll graduate, so this is incentive. Works for me.
Oh! My parents finally got a divorce. Weird conditions, but now there's more money to be spent on me since he won't be buying her ridiculous jewelry all the time! hurrah.

If you like small, light weight, and fast cars then you might be able to find a 2005 Lotus Elise in California for $30,000-$35,000.

Here's one for just under $35,000 but I'm sure you can find one for a lower price: http://www.motortrend.com/ni/used_cars/14/2005/lotus/elise/base/california/anaheim/247976386/113/?filter=Classifieds/VehicleUsedIncludeSuperPremium|1|ProductGroupId.no t_equals||RadiusSearchDistance|92126|RadiusSearchP ostalCode|92126|RadiusSearchRadius|300|VehicleMake |Lotus|VehicleModel|Elise|VehicleUsedIncludeCarsDo tCom|1|VehicleYear.max|2010|VehicleYear.min|2005|&sortby=RadiusSearchDistance|&index=1&pagenum=1&sourcePageType=listings&numListings=20&nopaging=false

Looked like one of the American upper-end ones. Either without selectable awd/4wd or she forgot to use it. (Or didn't know she had it). Couldn't say which is more likely.
