Default No talent?
In one of the recent threads, there were comments that if one didn't write one's own songs, or were popular because they were on a 'talent' show, then they weren't proper singers.
I found this X Factor clip which is one of the many that proves how stupid that attitude is...

The uploader has not made this video available in your country. Some pretty famous people have started out on talent shows, but then you also get people like Jedward out of them, especially these days.

I think it's fair to say that being able to sing/play an instrument well makes you talented.
Being able to perform/entertain makes you talented.
Being able to write good songs/music (Either deep and meaningful or just fun and catchy) makes you talented.

Being able to do all three would make you a legend. There are many many talented people around but there are very few legends, especially in this day and age.

If you're if trying to sell yourself as a singer I'd say being able to sing is a pretty important requisite.

"Talent" does not make you an artist. I don't know why we have so much of this modern promotion of "talent shows" parading as art.

It's just a massive circus with a bunch of "look at me I can sing/dance/juggle" idiots.

And it's not about writing your own songs either.

A lot of artists write their own songs but that doesn't make them any good.

Yes but in art, the quality of the voice is not relevant to the song.

You and Gordo are confusing the talent to sing with the talent of making art.

Yeah, singing is a talent but it's not much else.

Nope, I posted that in response to some who dismissed the ability of those who sang covers because they didn't wite the songs.
One, in particular, was rather anal about classical music - completely overlooking the point that the composers not only couldn't perform the works they wrote, themselves but that EVERY performance they'd boasted of listening to were effectively covers by the orchestras.
Then again, there are people who can write great music and songs, but cannot sing or perform themselves.
Lastly, many who write music/songs can make many times as much from others paying to record their songs as they do from their own recordings. Without artists performing these covers, a significant revenue stream would dry up.

Having the ability to sing cover songs is like having the ability to kick a ball very well, it doesn't make you a football player. You're just really good at kicking the ball.

I do understand that covers can show how good the performer is at emoting the same song but only on an album not on some talent show.

That's a shocking analogy.

Yeah it is. It would be better to say it's like being a good player, but you'll never make a manager or tactician.

reactivator11, I don't know what your point is. Singing well can be a talent. Song writing can be a talent. To be able to do both would be even better. Both involve skills, just different ones.

I'm agreeing that both are talents but neither of them has anything to do with art per se.

I checked the link when I posted it and it worked then - most of the time (for the last 6 weeks or so) I've had trouble getting anything from Youtube.

React', define "art"...
