Sometimes I wonder if I talk to myself, or if I'm not clear enough in the instructions I give. Then I realise no, it's not me, I'm just dealing with people who could loose a battle of wits with a potted plant.
Take the poor unfortunate who I just served. The PC was in 3 weeks ago because it was full of virus's. Long story short it needed wiping clean and Windows re-installing. When I gave it back to them I said: "You had dozens of file sharing programs on your PC and along with MSN it seems like they're responsible for your infections. It didn't help you weren't using any Antivirus either. I've loaded you on a free Antivirus and Firewall, I'd suggest you scan every few days but I'd recommend NOT using file sharing programs. IF you insist on using them, be carefull what you download." Today, they PC is back and at current count there are 2678 virus infections. Not only that, the antivirus and firewall I had loaded have been uninstalled and replaced with: Norton Antivirus 2002 with no updates. I am about to call them and ask what they were smoking and will post back with the results. Edit: OK, the reason they uninstalled the AV and Firewall was: "it kept comming up the music was a virus" *sigh* The reason they loaded Norton: "My mate said Norton was the best" *double sigh* Their reaction when I told them they were full of virus's again: "You only fixed it a few weeks ago! It shouldn't have gotten anything! You should have stopped it!" *Triple sigh* Right, I'm off to put some Chlorine in the Gene pool, BRB. |

I ran into that quite a bit when I did bench work. I'd have people asking for free service because "if I had done the work right, we wouldn't get viruses/spyware 6 months later." They didn't get free work and I would tell them again what not to do on the net. Sure enough a few months later they'd be back in with the same problems blaming me because yet again "I didn't do the job right."
It was especially funny when you get the guy in who downloads porn pretty much 24/7 full of viruses and ask how he got them... I even had a guy, after I told him I would have to wipe his machine, ask if I could back up his 10 or so GB of porn [rofl]. I did of course, but charged him extra for it. |

I remember it being longer though. *shrugs shoulders* |
