It was a play on words more than a joke. Alex Zane is on some BBC radio channel.

I'm watching the Opening Ceremony right now (thinking just a few weeks ago I was in that stadium). This is great, we had all the excitement of the Olympics - and when it was sad when it was all over - and now we get have the excitement all over again!

Oh.

It's quite late. Are you legless?

For the record, I'm watching the opening ceremony in HD and at no point have I not wished I had an 80" TV in my average lounge.

Oh, I take that back now Claire Balding has appeared.

The main olympic stadium is an amazing thing.

Claire Balding? Are you watching in delay or something?

The main olympic stadium is an amazing thing. There was a documentary about its construction on a few months ago, which was fascinating. One of the things I learned is that the roof isn't there to keep the spectators dry.

I'll be there again on Saturday, and on Sunday week!

We know.
It's a completely pointless activity as far as I'm concerned. It either turns people into morons, or into aggressive thugs. When I drink I do to enjoy what it is I'm drinking, not to get drunk.

I'm watching the Ch 4 stream on TVCatchup. Maybe I missed her, but I thought she hadn't been on since she interviewed the GB athletes just before they went out.

Bungle, this is a seriously bigoted point of view. Don't get me wrong, a lot of people get like this but there are millions of people who enjoy a few drinks with their friends and don't change their personalities.

The trick is, to discover what amount takes one beyond tipsy but well before wasted. Tipsy to just beyond is a the real fun zone of drinking, beyond that you just become accident prone or pissed.(american meaning) If you are going to sporting events and at least not achieving tipsy, you are missing the eff out. For whatever reason a light buzz emotionally invests you far more into sporting events you'd otherwise not give 2 shits about.

Not really. Public drunkenness and the chaos it causes are big problems in the UK......and a lot of UK people take the problem with them elsewhere. It's national embarrassment as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think so. If you need to get drunk to enjoy an event you're probably at the wrong place. In the UK alcohol is banned at football stadiums because of exactly the problems I described

Well, that is just because people are idiots in your country. Alcohol is allowed in every stadium in the US. Hooliganism doesn't exist here. Bungle, your aversion to drinking is not it's effects per se, as even you should realize the worst examples are not normal ones, but instead fear of losing that protective shield that has everything placed just as it should be for you. You are incapable of thinking outside of your bubble, and fearful of things that are. Shrug. You are afraid of losing control.

It's not a few drinks that's the problem, it's when people have drink after drink after drink and think they're being "clever" or doing something to be proud of.
Again, you are being highly bigoted here. I know loads of people that go out and get steaming drunk and are guilty of nothing more than having a good time. Do you really think you are a good enough person to be so judgemental about other people's harmless activities?

Arguably, it's a bigger achievement than the olympics.

Yes.

The fact that the people getting drunk (and you) don't see it as anything wrong is a problem in itself.

As the old saying goes: it's not big and it's not clever; in fact it's a disgrace.

No, the problem is how judgemental you are being. Do you see these people judging you for going to York on your own? The fact that you are looking down your nose on people enjoying themselves in a way you don't understand says far more about you than them.
