...are the only source of power in an electric car. Think about this for a minute. A petrol powered car will recycle engine heat to get the temperature up in the cabin in the winter. If you live in a cold area, be prepared to see your electric car's range decrease substantially when the temperature drops... as your batteries are being used to heat your ass instead of taking you somewhere. Isn't that a valid concern? ![]() |

Ironically, any gadget that Acu is listing drains the batteries whiiiiiiich... Simply put, when the cabin demands heat, the first stage of heat is supplied by an electric heater. If that is not enough, then the ICE turns on. When the ICE is running, it supplies heat just like your own car. The thermal system of the Chevy Volt is an amazing feat of engineering. It operates in many different modes (think: cold ambiance, electric only vs hot ambiance, electric only, then consider the ICE modes). The system is actually bi-directional, the motors and batteries are actually heated OR cooled depending on the conditions. Here is a phenomenal link explaining the four cooling loops. |

Ignoring the fact that your entire post is based on an incorrect assumption (The volt is not an Electric-only car, it is a hybrid), it is still incorrect. The Volt has an electric motor and an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Volt First line of the whole page. |
