He's been on death row for 19 years and his conviction was based on testimony of a co-defendant. 4 men were charged with murder (3 blacks and 1 white) and the 3 blacks were put on death row, one already executed, while the white guy is out on parole. You can't make this sh1t up... So, a death penalty conviction, based on the testimony of one guy who basically got away with it, with no forensic evidence whatsoever. Should it stand? |

Nice - I sometimes forget you're a steaming Thatcherite. Ha, I'm not right-wing at all. I lean more towards the left on most isses, I just hate the way The Guardian gets so preachy and sycophantic over every little thing. I don't really have one daily read. I tend to swap between BBC News, Sky News, Yahoo News and The Sun (I know it's a diabolical tabloid but I like all the breast pictures). If it's a big story I tend to Google it and try and get a more well-rounded picture of the event from several sources. I worked closely with football and news journalists at Sky for a couple of years and despite how impartial they might tell you they are, there is always a degree of bias in their reporting in my experience. |

Some things don't add up.
Its not often you can jump 70 feet into water and come away unscathed (Thomas Cummins), and why would the rapist/killer use a condom ? If some guy is going to rape a woman and then force her to jump 70 feet into a river which is going to result in her death, he is going to be pretty certain that when they find the body there will be little or no DNA recoverable from the body to be able to identify him. As in the case where people lie, the lies have to remain the same, so if the lies have remained the same over the last 19 years then surely their not lies, but the truth. If you lie about things then the story has to remain the same, but more often than not it doesn't, but if you tell the truth about things, then it usually remains the same, even years down the line, because your not remembering the lie you've made up, your remembering a memory, a conscious thought, and usually memories that you've experienced will always remain the same, no matter how many years after the event. edit: 70 feet jump into water sounds like a death sentence tbh, especially if your a first timer at this... http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com...-earth?image=2 |

Some things don't add up. As for the main point of the thread. No. And if we are going to have a death penalty it should at least be consistent. |

Its not often you can jump 70 feet into water and come away unscathed (Thomas Cummins), --- Post Update --- Tell that to all the people who jump into the water from a local quarry around here without any problems. |

I have cliff jumped into a reservoir from about that high. I turned out (semi) okay. Depends how you land and how deep the water is, if its a fast flowing river below then the surface tension is at least broken up, not like diving into a stagnant pond with very little flow, where as it would be like jumping onto concrete. Mythbuster's did a episode about this and above a certain height its like jumping onto concrete, think it was 100 feet or something, but they did that into a paddling pool, so the water might have been quite still. --- Post Update --- As to not sprinkle his DNA material all over the body which could then be used against him in court? I'm stretching here. Generally with these opportunistic crimes, the rapist is unlikely to have the forethought to use a condom especially if they have plans to dispose of the body in a river directly afterwards. |

Boom! Nicely done. Personally I'd rather read a detailed, if flawed piece with some journalistic integrity rather than 200 sound bites to try and get a rounded view. I've never really subscribed to that, probably because I am an old codger. |

I never said it was impossible, but the likelihood of anyone suffering injuries from that distance are quite high (no pun intended). I've only ever seen one person get hurt and it's because he pulled his legs up and he weighs in excess of 280lbs. Otherwise people do it all summer and no one gets injured. Here is a very poor video, but you can see at about 1:35 in where I'm talking about. Kind of...the quality is awful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYvUM8KQT4I |

No, not really, people jump from a specific place on a cliff at the quarry I mentioned, that is 74 feet from the top of the water, men and women do this all of the time, all summer. |

Yet, I imagine, if you are a girl that was just raped, it is dark, and you are not a cliff jumper, a 75 foot drop into nothing (from her perspective) is death. |
