Wait, so let me get this strait: you don't trim tree branches in preparation for storms? I am just going to assume that you have never seen a tree, nor priced out the cost of trimming. It is a BIG mother****er, dude. There is no predicting which -if any- will break. In fact, this Friday's incident was a branch from the side of the tree opposite my service lines. ![]() And... there was no warning for this storm. |

Ok, i'm confused here. There was an update flagged? So did the client download it on tuesday, but you hadn't restarted Steam then? I update Steam whenever it asks, (it only takes a few seconds). I really could not tell you why it happened. But I will say that both times the same bullshit happened as I described in the OP. Could it be bad luck that updates were flagged both times BEFORE shutting down? Does this happen every time? You know what? I will try it again tonight by unplugging my modem to emulate the same experience. You got my curious. |

Here's a thread or two that might be of interest:
According to the posters, the issue is with how Windows handles Steam while shutting down. Steam I guess takes some time neatly packing up its data and putting the chairs on the table before locking up, but Windows is impatient and won't give it the time it needs, simply killing the process instead. When it starts up again, it sees the mess left behind the previous night and tries to clean up, but doing so requires an internet connection so it can download whatever files are suspect or recheck and corrupted data. If it can't, it exits. Sounds promising, i always shutdown Steam manually, especially since the Steam Cloud uploads can sometimes take a minute or two to complete, so i never leave it running when i shutdown windows, mainly because Win7 shuts down so fast and doesn't give Steam time to do its thing. Maybe that's the difference? |

Well, I never manually shut down Steam. It starts with Windows and ends with it too. I will add the manual shut down to my testing next time I get a chance.
Interesting find. Really, really poor design on Valve's side if that is the case. --- Post Update --- While I appreciate you trying to help Will, at this point, it's abundantly clear the problem lies not with Steam but with his refusal to pay illegal immigrants to maintain his property. |

Right, nothing to do with Windows killing all processes regardless of what's going on? FWIW OS X does something similar, although the difference is that all processes are stored as an image so when you reboot, everything is recovered in exactly the state it was shut down in. When you say SHUT DOWN, the computer should shut down, not wait for Steam to finishing flagging itself for updates. If the process to shutdown was softer, selecting shut down would do nothing most of the time. I want that **** to listen to me. Shut the **** down you piece of **** DRMware. ![]() |
